Voice Recognition on 720 - Discussion

My VR was killed

I have my GO720 since Christmas 2007. The VR didn't work, but I had the icons ( grey ).
Then in March after an update from TT the VR worked.
Now I did an update late June 2008 and now my icons dissapered.
I had an backup with the VR, but that doesn't work either anymore.
I am not a programm wizard. Is there a way to get it back?
I have the NA map.

Thanks.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I have upgraded my TT720 to firmware version 8.010 and the newest North America map v720.1803. VR initially did not work following this update. The VR files were not installed onto the 720 when I updated via HOME. However, as someone previously stated, the files were downloaded to my computer when I downloaded the new map from tomtom. All I did was browse to that folder on my computer (C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Download\map\North_America, or wherever you direct HOME to store downloaded files), explored the North_America_2GB.zip file found in that directory, and selected all of the files and dragged them into the \\Maps\North_America_2GB folder on the tomtom. Once all of the VR files were transferred from my computer to the tomtom, VR worked beautifully. It looks like the interface has had some slight visual alterations made with the newest firmware version, but functionality has not changed. I am very glad VR capability has not been lost due to the firmware and map upgrades.

VR not working on new Australia Map 720.1868

DHN,

thank you for that. I am obsessed with getting VR on the AU map to work.
it works with my North America's map.
I downloaded Firmware 7.221 and would like to downgrade to see if it works. But since I see that the N. America map has speech files for each state I assume that the version of the Australian map that had VR working would have had the speech files in it. I am after those files.

It is a challenge.
Once I get it working I will probably not use it that much
Cheers
I
Folks,
I currently have VR working perfectly on OS 7.481 and Australia Map 700.1491
I have asked TT if there are problems upgrading to OS 8.010 & Aust Map 720.1868
Their response to my questions on 9/7/08 was :
---------------------
Dear Mr Smyth,

In response to your questions:

a) Yes you will need to delete the old maps first, but not to create space rather they can not run both maps at the same time on the internal memory.
b)
In regards to the Voice recognition feature, this was never supported with the Australian maps. It was available on a release as a test, however it still requires further development before it can be released with the Australian maps. Please continue to check for updates on when this does become supported.

c) Voice Recognition at present will not work with the current maps and application.

d) We have not had any reported errors with the current release of Nav core 8.010

e) On TomTom HOME at the Top of the page there is a menu 'device' if you have a SD card installed you will be able to select the option change device. This will then allow you to select either the internal or removable storage device.
Regards,
TomTom Promotions

I am sure you will be pleased that TT "have not had any reported problems with .... 8.010" - you are all imagining it !!
I guess I will stay exactly where I am with it all working well. I cannot see any improvements in the maps anyway !#@!#
BTW my solar powered TT720 runs for more than 5 hours on my bicycle now ! ........until I go into the shade !! :D
Will attach Cspeech_aus.dat when I find out how !

My VR Icons are greyed out. I have the latest map 720 and the updated firmware 8.010

Can you guys help me out to get this thing working?

Thank you.

Let me ask this. In our 720 map folder on your unit, do you see a bunch of csspeech_xx.dat files? If you do, in your asr folder, do you see a file called support_asr.dat file? If the answer to the previous questions is 'yes', then I can only suggest a pin reset or try reverting back to Navcore version 7.481.

Now then, if you DO have the cspeech files but no support_asr.dat file, then use notepad and create a text fle with just the value 1 in it. No spaces. No carriage return. And make sure the file you create is support_asr.dat and NOT support_asr.dat.txt (set Windows folders to show extension for known file types). If there is an extension showing .txt, then just rename the file to support_asr.dat.

Finally.....................

If you do NOT see any cspeech.dat files in the map folder, look in your download folder where the 720 map got downloaded. View the cab file for the map and extact the speech files to a temp folder and, from there, copy them to the map folder on the unit.

Lastly, you need to make sure you are using a computer voice to make all the above work effectively.

I know the above may seem convoluted (I tend to reply that way  ) but the bottom line is you need: the cspeech files, the support file and the computer voice.

Good luck.

Thanks for your help. One question. Do I put the support_asr.dat file in the asr folder, the map folder, or both?

Thanks again.

I told you in the reply just above your last post, the asr folder.
Sorry, did not mean to send it twice. Ok, everything is in the correct folders, but it is still greyed out. I did a reset, and computer voice is set. Is there anything else I can do, or am I stuck with a 720 without VR?

Thanks.

I forgot to ask the most obvious question. Do you have the North America map 7.20 (which you should) or the USA & Canada map 7.20 (which you should not).

If not sure .... tap satellite bars once to see firmware version. Tap that screen to see map and build.

North American 720

Well, if that is the case AND you have cspeech files in the NA map folder AND you have a support_asr.dat file with ONLY a 1 in it in the asr folder AND you have a computer voice selected, then VR should work.

Other than attempting to roll back your firmware to a (hopefully) backed up 7.481 or (even better) 7.221 from 8.010, then I am stymied as to what to suggest.

Well, besides the reset which you've said you tried, you might try to download and run the clear flash tool from here: http://www.tomtom.com/support/index.php?FID=6211&Lid=4&nostat=1

I'm grasping at straws now

Just to be clear. I have a maps folder and a NAM folder. Should I put the speech files in the North American folder? I copiedc them to the map folder. I always had firmware 8.010. I just bought it. So I don't have any back ups except for what is on the device now.

Thanks.

Aha!

Put the speech files right in the North_America folder, please, and then report back.

That did the trick. Put it in the nam folder, not the map folder. Thank so much for your help. Have a great weekend...

Ok, I have the VR icons up, but I can't get it to work. As soon as I press the spoken address icons, I get a loud noise and then it says "Input not recognized" up in the top right-hand corner. It doesn't give me a chance to even say anything.

Edit:

I was able to figure it out. I had to delete all the "loose" files in my TT and then let TThome update and replace all the files. Removed the TT from the base and BOOM! vr activated and working. Took me till 1 a.m. to figure that out though LOL.

Yes!! Vr On My 720!!

Thanks guys.. just joined the forum today.. and followed the posts to a tee and WHAM!!! Voice Recognition on my TOMTOM! sweet as hell!

Thanks Again!

Works for me.

Here's what I did:

1) Ran all TT720 updates
2) Bought (ouch!) and installed North America map update (v 720)
3) On my computer (MAC :) ) I opened terminal
4) In terminal I typed nano support_asr.dat
5) in the NANO editor that opens, type in '1' (no quotes) then press ctrl-o to write the file, then ctrl-x to quit

6) In your USER folder, find support_asr.dat, and copy it to the ASR folder on the INTERNAL volume (disk mounted on the desktop / in Finder)
7) In your USER documents folder -> tomtom -> HOME -> download -> map -> north america -> NorthAmerica_2GB , expand the .zip file
8) copy the cspeechXX.dat files to
INTERNAL -> Map -> North America 2GB folder

boot the tomtom and et voila, it works :)
