Voice Recognition on 720 - Discussion

We can hope.

I was advised by a TomTom employee some months ago that VR was never meant to work with NA 720's in the first place and that future firmware releases may kill VR, even with those using the 'hack'. Hope this isn't what we're seeing.

All we need is one 720 NA user to respond here that he or she has Navcore 8.010 AND NA maps 7.10, 7.15 or 7.20 AND that VR still works. If that is the case, then there should be a way for all 720 users with that combo to get VR to work.

I hear what you are saying, DHN, but just yesterday (first time for me to see it) I watched a Garmin NUVI commercial, and they were exponding the virtues of their VR not only to create a route, but to find an Italian restaurant and this and that. Sure does seem like TT would take note and get their act together in regards to NA folks.

Sorry... forgot to mention that I have v715

OK.. re-updated/re-installed with NA v715 map (including all CS files.. I guess I cut-off the first d/l so the map didn't d/l correct) and still no luck..

Running Navcore 7.481, NA v715 w/ all CS files (not using SD card); tried w/ & w/o "support" file = no luck (does not even show Spoken Dialogue). I might re-try using Navcore 7.221 later and I'll report...

Also, it's quite interesting then what I use my original backup, it say "No maps loaded," but when I load original settings (navcore v7.05 and map v705), it works fine? Also, when connected to TTHome, I get an "updated" for a new application, but it's navcore v7.481 (not v7.221). Furthermore, once updated to v7.481, TTHome tells me that there is yet ANOTHER update, this time it's Navcore v8.010.9369... quite weird.

VR doesn't work for me any longer w/ navcore v7.481 or v8.01. It does work w/ v7.221 (or it has - will verify again), but when I use 7.221 I had map issues... I'll try to figure it out...

Yeah, TT upgrades firmware in stages. So, if you have 7.221, it offers 7.481 and if you have 7.481, it then offers 8.010. At least, that's how it's supposed to work:confused:

Have you tried a pin reset with 7.481 loaded to see if VR gets a 'kick start' that way? And you did say you had the support_asr.dat file in the asr folder, didn't you?

Voice on 720

Hello,
From where I can download the firmware 7.221 to enable Voice and how can I put everything in my device. Does ttf provides updates via USB cable.
To enable Voice Recognition on your 720 you must need the following:

  • NA Maps 7.10 version with voice recognition files. Here is an example:

    VRfiles.jpg

  • You also need the Firmware 7.221 installed
  • A text file called support_asr.dat with ONLY the number 1 in it.
NOTE: I attached the file. Unzip it and put the file in your ASR folder on the unit.

To use Voice recognition click on the main menu and select 'Navigate to'

VR1.jpg

Then select 'Address'

VR2.jpg

You will see 2 Voice Recognition options.

The difference is that the Spoken Address(Dialog) will ask you to state city, address, etc while the other option will not verbally ask you these options.

The next page will take you to this:

Hi everybody, This forum was really helpful for me and I want to pay back.
I got my TT720 for 250$ in a recent NewEgg sale, which was great. I was looking for a basic GPS but when I knew of the little VR trick, I thought it is worth it jumping for this little beast.
I am posting my successful experience to get VR to work. and thanks again for everybody who helped to enlighten us and shared his/her experience.

Off the box, my Go has the usual factory 7.05 maps and 7.something firmware. There were no VR icons at all. Here are the steps that I did (all data on my TT drive, I did not need to delete any files and still has 120 mb of free space)

1. Backup using TT home and Explorer (as stressed by everybody here, this is very important for any needed rollback)
2. I updated TT home, Go firmware (in stages), then chose the option (use latest map guarantee) and downloaded the latest NA_2gb/Guam maps
3. Now I placed the (support_asr.dat) file in the ASR folder, after restarting the machine, I got the VR icons but greyed out.
4. I went to My documents\TomTom\home\Downloads\map\North america\. There is a big zip file in that folder named (North_America_2GB). After confirming that the zip file was larger than the maps updated by TT home to my Go (because it did not copy the Cspeech.dat files among others), I extracted the whole zip file into the North_America_2GB folder in my Go drive.
5. I did the same for Guam, wondering if I will ever visit that place in my life!!
6. Still, the VR icons were greyed out!!, I used the reset button with no luck.
7. Finally, I went to the preferences on my Go, went to that last page. I selected, restore factory settings. and Whoaaaaaaaa.....VR works. It is really great and saves alot of time. Very nice feature with excellent recogniton thus far.

My configuration now is

TT home version: 2.3.1.92
Map version: NA_2GB 720.1803
Firmware: 8.010

I will be happy to answer any questions.
Respek,

Does anyone know where to get the Australia Cspeech.dat files from?
My VR works with the North America Map but when I switch to the AU map the simbol at the top right corner is greyed out.
Thank you in advance

I do believe that VR does not work with Aussie version 8 maps and Navcore 8. In fact, there was an Aussie here, or in another forum, who said VR ONLY worked with Aussie map 7.05 and, if I remember correctly, firmware 7.221. He seemed quite definite about that. I remember his saying 2 further map upgrades in the version 7 series also killed VR.

DHN,

thank you for that. I am obsessed with getting VR on the AU map to work.
it works with my North America's map.
I downloaded Firmware 7.221 and would like to downgrade to see if it works. But since I see that the N. America map has speech files for each state I assume that the version of the Australian map that had VR working would have had the speech files in it. I am after those files.

It is a challenge.
Once I get it working I will probably not use it that much
Cheers

Here is a biggy for me. I had an SD Card in my TT and somehow I upgraded the firmware on it and then updated it later on on the internal memory via home. Make sure you know what "device" is selected using HOME. So my TT booted to the SD memory and the maps where on the internal. Long story short I have everything right, the Cspeech files, the support_asr.dat and on, but the VR kept trying to change the "country" and would never accept a voice command despite colored icons. I put my SD in another device and blew all the files away except my music and all is well.

Thanks forum members for all the info.

TomTom will boot to wherever it detects the system files, in this case I presume the sd card. I suspect the speech files on internal were for a different map and that's why it wanted to change the country or you had the map on sd but speech files on internal with just one map.

If you have the system files, speech files and map in one location, I suspect you get VR.

I got the new USA 7.20 map and I believe it is installed on my SD card, and I decided to remove the North America Map since I just wanted to use the new USA map. How can I move the new map to internal memory, and I also don't seem to have cspeech files anywhere. I did an entire scan of my computer to try and find them.

The USA map does not have the required speech files to handle VR, only the North_America map does. Also, in your download directory on your hard drive where the map folder North America is, look in that map folder for a file ending with the extension .pna. It's a text file so you can view it with Notepad. It says what the map is and the version. does it say North America or USA? If North America, do you not see a bunch of csspeechxx.dat files in that folder?

in the file called North_America_2GB.pna it contains
Code:
ID=North_America_2GB.pna
2115254372
705
build=1481
id=90268

This is in a backup i have and there are no cspeech files, and on the internal memory of the actual unit in the North_America_2GB folder no .pna file exists.

You have the wrong version of the North America map (705). You need **at least** 7.10 to have the required speech files.
