Voice Recognition on 720 - Discussion

I currently have the 7.5... firmware and already have voice recognition. I noticed my friend who has the 8.010 firmware doesn't have voice recognition...so he'll have to add it.

If I upgrade to 8.010 will I lose my VR capabalities?

There is no firmware 7.5 for a 720; there is a 7.481.

Anyway, if map version is 7.10 or higher, then even firmware 8.010 should have VR -- if set up properly. Some with that version found they needed to create the support_asr.dat file with a 1 in it and put it in the asr folder to get VR to work.

I just upgraded to v8.10 & still have the VR. I also originally gained VR by adding the support file

I have App version 8.010 and map version NA 810.1907... i added the support_asr.dat file and the speech recognition buttons are still greyed out... any ideas? Can it be activated?

I got this response from TomTom about speech recognition

Speech recognition is not a supported feature for the GO 720 here in the US. It is compatible with some models of the GO 720 that were provided with smaller regional maps such as Germany. We apologize for any confusion. We anticipate having this menu item removed once again in a future update.

that said, i know a lot of you have it working, i just want to know if i can do it with my software version... it would be a nice feature to have since it is already built in...

Hi y'all

I just upgraded the map to North America 2gb V8.10 i have the VR but its in Grey!!! where should i put that support file? i already put it in the ASR folder!

I looked in the TomTom/HOME/Download/map/North_America folder on my computer and found the zip file... unzipped it to my desktop and found the cspeech files... copied them over to the north america folder on the 720 and it all works...

just to help others with my configuration, i updated map to NA 810 and tomtom app version 8.010,
i loaded asr_support.dat that is attached to the beginning of this thread into the ASR folder on the 720,
copied the cspeech files from that zip file to the north america folder on the 720, turned it off and back on and everything is active, no longer grayed out in the menu... works great, although i'd like to know what the exact commands are in the menu system, i have to actually tap the screen in certain parts because I can't figure out what to say (i.e. "ok" "done" whatever...)

glad it worked. Of u go 2 tomtom's website & locate the manual 4 the 920 or 930, go to the voice recognition section 2 explain in details the proper commands

Trying to activate speech recognition on my new 720.

I have TomTom 720 under application version 8.010.
Map = North_America_2gb version= 705.1481

Read your forum thread. I only see the greyed out icons --- If my map version needs to be changed -- where do I get the required 7.10 version ???

To answer your question--I purchased this unit about 2months ago.

From your reply, I am guessing that my map version is old and will not support the speech recognition function. When I contact TomTom Home, should I be requesting the latest North America maps, or a specific version ??

Ask 4 the lastest maps available 4 it unit. Did u create a Home account? If so when?

Pedro, I see that you've helped a number of other people, and I sure could use your help as well. I just can't get this speech recognition thing to work. I've spend the last two days reading different discussion boards about it. Here's where I stand:

1. I'm using firmware version 8.010
2. I updated to the NA map 710
3. At first I could not even see the voice recognition options.
4. I created the support_ast.dat file that was mentioned many times. I can now see the voice recognition options, but they are greyed out.
5. I'm still missing the cspeech files! I looked in the C:\My Documents\...\Downloads folder but I have no maps folder in that path. I did a hard drive search for the zip file, but it's not on my computer anywhere.

I'm completely stuck. I need the cspeech files! Please help!

Strange, it should be in your HOME downloads folder. When I downloaded mine, it was located in:
My Documents/TomTomHOME/Download/map/North America

In there are 4 files: the activation map.cab file, map.gif - x2, NA.toc and the NA zip file.

What is the map build for your NA 710 map?

Thanks Pedro. Just got my TomTom 720 yesterday and immediately started modifying it based on what I found in the forums here. Updated everything online, made one change like you suggested, and it works fine. Only problem I have been having is the volume level of my voice...seems a bit low.

Your welcome. Try the pin reset, it may fix your problem.
