Voice Recognition on 720 - Discussion

dhn & others: Mixed Results

I tried to get the VR on my 720 working after a house call and excellent advice from dhn. I did the following.

1) downloaded and installed the speech files into the North_ American_2GB folder
2) downloaded and installed the ASR folder only from Oldboy's update page. I unzipped the entire file for the tomtomGOx20series V7.221. Deleted all folders except the ASR folder and extracted the ASR folder to the V7.221 on my 720.
3) download the support_asr. file from page 1 of this thread and installed it in the ASR folder.

The results of my efforts are mixed. The spoken address and spoken address (dialog) icon are active. The problem is that when I say the city, it respond with a message "city not recognized." I tried several different city names and still the same result.

Likewise with streets, the unit generated street names are not even close to those which I say.

Finally, when it gets to the number screen. The numbers generated are occasionally right, but far more often a garbled mess of the digits I say.

Any thoughts as to a fix? Or is this as good as it gets. If so, I am very disappointed in the unit's VR capabilities. Thanks.

P.S dhn, thanks again for the "house call." I really appreciate the help.

Wow... if dhn didn't get it to work, I don't know what will! :D

Anyway, the only thing I might mention is that when I first enabled mine, I noticed the very first time I used it it flashed something like "setting country" (or similar) and then it worked. Not sure if that is significant or not.

Any chance you have a mixed country/language issue? Maybe the unit is listening in French and reacting in English (or vice versa)? Truly, mine is working "flawlessly", as they say.

Beats me. Just a thought. That would explain not understanding your voice.

HELP with missing ASR file

I do not have VR capability (there isn't any icons) nor do I have a directory or folder called "ASR" anywhere when I browse the TT720 device under Windows Explorer (show hidden files/folders/OS files are checked, so I should be seeing everything). I've also made a full backup (two copies; one via Windows Explorer and one via TT Home) just in case. :)

Then, I create a directory called "ASR" and extract the "support_asr.zip" file (which contains a file called "1") into it?

d

I have the same problem as post #355. I am missing the ASR file. I do not have the speech icon. Here are my specs:

App 7.221
OS:2318
GPS v1.21
Map: 'North_America_2GB' v710.1584

Can someone help me out with the missing ASR folder?

You need to update your firmware.
I assume that you have a new unit so after your firmware update, you can update the new map for free.

.

I am also having the same VR difficulties. It will only recognize a few cities even if I speak deliberately and clearly. It won't recognize some easy city names. Numbers are recognized OK. I tried the VR feature on a 730 unit at bestbuy with the same cities I am having trouble with and they are recognized perfectly. Do you think that the VR files may be incompatible somehow?

What state are you in? I'm in Minnesota, and I wonder if it has something to do with the state file.

Also, did you get your ASR files from Oldboy's site, or was it on your 720 when you bought it? If we both got the files from Oldboy's site, then your theory about the ASR (VR) files being the problem might be correct.

I am in Florida. I did get my files from Oldboy's site. Is there someone out there that has the VR file for Florida that they can send me so I can test out this theory? Thanks.

NO!!!

Do not delete any files from the North America Folder! Just ADD the speech files to the folder. And extract the support file to the asr folder.

I finally gave it a shot this evening and ran into an issue when I was copying the cpseech files to my North_America_2GB folder. It ran out of disk space!

FWIW, I haven't updated to the 8.3 firmware or the 815 maps even though I did request and downloaded the latter (it's on my computer) yet.

Just wondering but I do have a blank 4 GB SD card that I can put into my TT720. Would it work if I were to move the entire North_America_2GB folder to my SD card and then extract the cspeech files to it? What about the ASR folder? Would it reside on the internal memory or on the SD card?

Thanks,
David

Yes, you can put the NA map on a 4-gig sdhc card. And the speech files go in that NA map folder too. The asr folder can be on internal or the sdhc card. your choice.

I too would appreciate it if someone could send me a "clean" ASR folder and see if that will fix my VR problem. Another possibility would be to post the folder here since others may have the same problem. Evidently many of the recently sold 720s do not have an ASR folder from the factory. Thank you.

Mixed results; partial success?

First, the relevant versions:

App 7.221 (8572/071121) OS:2318
64 MB RAM (free: 23.0 MB)
GPS v1.21, Boot 5.4106
Map: 'North_America_2GB' v710.1584
Language: English US

Note: I DID NOT update to the 8.3 firmware or the 815 maps. My TT720 out-of-the-box did not have the ASR folder or VR as an option.

I copied the entire 'North_America_2B' folder from my TT720 into an SD card.

I found the ASR folder from the file, 7.221_x20.zip, from OldBoy's site and extracted that folder (and all its files) into my TT720 device (internal memory)

Added the support_asr.dat file from page 1 of this thread to the ASR folder to my TT720 (internal memory).

Downloaded the cspeech.* files the link on page 1 of this thread and copied it to the map directory that's in my SD card.

Rebooted TT720.

Device shows the two VR icons, "Spoken address" and "Spoken address (dialog)"! But when I click on it, it doesn't prompt me to speak and shows me the keyboard with a voice icon greyed out. But when I enter the city, address, and get to the part where it asks me for the house #, now it prompts me to speak the house number.

So it looks like it's only recognizing it halfway?

By the way, I did try putting the ASR folder in my SD card instead of the internal TT720 memory but it didn't work; it seems that only by having it in TT720 itself the two VR icons would show up.

720 voice recognition

Just contacted tomtom support about voice recognition on my 720 which I purchased new in box off ebay jan.6 and was told that feature was removed from latest 720 models and the only way to get that feature was to install latest map version 8.1.Was also told they would not honor my free map upgrade or my warranty because I did not buy from a dealer even though unit was new in unopened box.

the ARS folder is 18MB in size. After compression, I got an 12MB self-extracting package... how can I send it?

Thanks for the offer, crislevin. However, I notice you have the 8.3 firmware. I not sure that this version's ARS folder is compatible with the 7.221 firmware that most of us who are having problems with our VR have. So a question for the pros here: Are the the two compatible? If they are, crislevin, you can click on our user names and will get a link that will allow you to email the folder as an attachment to us. Thanks

Check step 6. Make sure that you download the CONTENTS of the file to the root and not the folder itself.

I have copied all the files....
I have my main file named as backup(the file I backed up using tomtom home to my computer and then cpoied to my Sd card).
The back up file has the ASR folder, the North_America_2GB folder with all cspeech files

Yes, the extract file creates a folder with all the files that need to put at the root directory of TomTom otherwise it would not work.

Try extracting the ASR file again make sure that the ASR folder is in the root TomTom directory and say yes to any replacement of old files.
