Voice Recognition on 720 - Discussion

Storage Space

After cleaning out all of the extra voice files, I ended up with 1.66 GB used and 255 MB spare. All of the Cspeech files are loaded.

What files can be moved to the aux storage card (besides music, etc.)??

Thanks again for the help.

Willy

Any mapshares you dl are relatively small and can easily be handled within the available space you have in internal for quite a while.

Where are the extra voice files you are speaking of? Did you just delete them from the internal memory?
After loading all cspeech files I ended with 186MB to spare.
PS Thanks to all those that share their talents.

Great! Now you can buy a nice case for the 720, like I did (one of the biggest things i didn't like about the 720 was no case...)

They did it for me today too. In person. I guess that beats a phone call. Too easy to say no on a phone call.

Ok, I am glad you are good. If any one else needs files, let me know. I brought my external hard drive today with all my backups. lol

removing extra voice files

Go to TT Home (new version) and one of the blocks is (remove from unit). It will list all of the software packages on the TT. Select the voice files you don't want and it will delete them for you. The only one I kept was susan - the computer voice. If you find you want one of the others back, you can check for updates and download them again.

FlyinWillie,
$179!!! I'm going back to Best Buy tonight to get more money!
CompUSA now has them for $169. Note -- these are refurbs in both cases, 6 month warranty. Cheap way to get 2nd unit, though. I'd hold off on new maps for about 28 of the 30 days in hopes of seeing something new soon.

I think yesterday's deal of the day (see post #314) was the best!
I got my 720 for $79 since BestBuy's website stated that there was an additional $100 off the $179. I think they've now changed the site but for a brief moment, many got in on the deal.
And $79 for what now amounts to a 730 that not only speaks to me but listens when I speak (I'm lonely), well you can't beat it.
I can't wait to see what other discoveries you experts come up with.
Thanks to all.

VR files

Hi All,

I got in on the BB deal from yesterday and just backed up all my files and wanted to try out the VR. However, when I go to the map folder there are no cspeech files. I tried to delete the map folder and regrabbed the file from Home and still no cspeech files. Can some one point me in the right direction?

Firmware 7.221
NA_2GB v 710.1584

Thanks in advance.

Send a pm to Pedro2NR, a supermod here, who may be able to provide you with the files you need to put into the specific map folder.

So that was you running out of BestBuy? I was right behind you.
OK so here is what I did.
1. Install latest version (2.5) of TomTom Home from the website http://www.tomtom.com/plus/service.php?ID=17&Lid=4 and create a login for yourself.
2. Check for updates on the TT Home and it will install version 8.30 of the software and it will also erroneously inform you that you have the latest map. YOU DO NOT.
3. Contact customer support and tell them that you see they have a map version 8.xx for sale and your unit isn't offering this as a new purchaser update. They will give you a case # and email a link and ask for a return email with proof of purchase attached to a question.
4. Call them back after you respond and they will then upload the latest map to your PC's TT Home folder and then automatically to your 720 (takes about 1 hour)
5. Once installed, reboot. After you reconnect to computer, close TT Home. Then access the TT 720 as a disc drive through My Computer. Create a folder somewhere on your PC (I use Desktop). Copy and Paste the contents of the TT's entire flash drive using Windows Explorer NOT TomTom's backup.
6. Set Folder options under Control Panel and check Show hidden files and uncheck hide file extensions of known type.
7. Using Notepad create a file following instructions at https://www.tomtomforums.com/showthread.php?t=6594 and place it on your desktop. Note: First time I didn't have "hide file extensions" unchecked and there was an extra .txt hiding on the file name rendering it useless.
8. OK now when you link the 720 to the computer, again exit the TT Home and open up my computer and you will see the 720 as a drive. Explore the files and add the .dat file to the ASR folder and then open the North_America_2GB folder under the Downloads from TomTom (usually in My Documents/TomTom) and copy all or whichever you need (US State specific and Canada) Cspeech files back into the North_America_2GB folder on the 720's drive and after you disconnect from computer, power off, power on, you should be all set.
Credit to all who crossed this river before me and please correct me where I am wrong.

When I got mine working with VR, I did all the steps you mentioned and it worked for me. The only exception was that I never ever was provided the cspeech files from TomTom. Ever. Anywhere. Had I not been able to download them from Pedro (via his link here in this thread) I could never have done it.

Pedro - If you have the texas cspeech i would appreciate a copy.

Thanks
trb33,
Sure, I am zipping them right now and will upload it when it's done.

Elviso,
Since u have a new unit, I recommended you to go ahead and use the free map upgrade which will have the cspeech files.

i followed all the instructions, but when i go to navigate to address page, the two voice input button are all grayed out.

did anybody confirms this hack works on 8.3/map 815?

also, is that "reboot" means paper clip reset? or just power off/on?

Follow the steps from >>here<<.
Reboot does not mean paper clip reset. Just a simple power off/on.
Pin reset is a paper clip reset.

Good luck.

You DO have the cspeechXX.dat files in the specific map folder (like North_America)?

You DO have the support_asr.dat file in the asr folder with just a 1 in it? (and the file was not REALLY called support_asr.dat.txt with the .txt. hidden?? [ You can verify if you've set under Folder Options (in Control Panel)/View/ Advanced/ that not only are hidden files/folders showing BUT also extensions for known file types].

Then try a pin reset.
