Voice Recognition on 720 - Discussion

i followed all the instructions, but when i go to navigate to address page, the two voice input button are all grayed out.

did anybody confirms this hack works on 8.3/map 815?

also, is that "reboot" means paper clip reset? or just power off/on?
Confirmed: I used 8.3/map8.15 in the procedure as described above.

Help Please

I got in on the Best Buy $79.99 deal and now have two 720s in hand. One is for myself and the second is for my daughter-in-law for her birthday.

I would very much like to get Voice Recognition on both units. However, the idea seems like a pipe dream for a computer programming challenged person like myself. In fact, my head is spinning after reading this thread and the "inside baseball" talk of you computer wizards.

So I have to ask if any of you gurus online here live in the Twin Cities area? If so, I would gladly pay you to do the upgrades required to activate VR. Please email if interested.

Thanks everyone. I'm new here and very much enjoy following the discussion even though I haven't a clue as to what you are talking about:) .

...go ahead and use the free map upgrade which will have the cspeech files.
I don't know why, but that really doesn't seem to be true. Maybe it once was. Or maybe if you already have the cspeech files the upgrade will provide them again. However, I just did a map upgrade from 710 to 815 last week and I did not get any cspeech files. And I was already at app version 8.300 when I did it.

Frank, are you SURE the speech files are not in the specific map folder in the cab file you downloaded and just that they never got installed??

Look under My Documents/TomTom. These are the folders downloaded from TomTom and NOT any backups you may have created and stored on your computer.
Click on Tom Tom and you should see 2 folders. One labeled Home and the other North_America_2GB.
Click on the North_America_2GB folder and you should see a subfolder named Brand as well as all the cspeech files. I just did this yesterday and it worked like a charm.
I followed the earliest instructions given and , neither the support file nor the cspeech files had been automatically loaded into the GPS for use though at least the cspeech files were downloaded in the folder described above.

Ohhh hell! I found them! Now that you caused me to look around more. Specifically, the NA map (zip, not cab) I downloaded can be found in my TomTom HOME installation folders.

It was at the default TomTom HOME program directory structure in Vista of:

"C:\Users\<logon_name>\Documents\TomTom\HOME\Downloads\complete\map\North_America_2GB\North_America_2GB.zip"

Inside that zip file is the map and also all the cspeech files! And you are right, they were never installed for some reason.

Geeze!!!!

Here is a case for backing up your entire TOMTOM\HOME directory, much less your TomTom itself. None of my backups from the TomTom have these originally downloaded ZIP files.

-Frank (it's enough to make me MAD!)

Hopefully, ok.

As I said, there should be more files in the asr folder but let's take one step at a time.

Let me know how things go tomorrow. Good luck!

I just bought a new TT720 earlier this week and when I checked the version information, it states:

Device AK8SE B2BTJ
App 7.221 (8572/071121) OS:2318
64 MB RAM (free: 23.0 MB)
GPS v1.21, Boot 5.4106
Map: 'North_America_2GB' v710.1584
Language: English US

I do not have VR capability (there isn't any icons) nor do I have a directory or folder called "ASR" anywhere when I browse the TT720 device under Windows Explorer (show hidden files/folders/OS files are checked, so I should be seeing everything). I've also made a full backup (two copies; one via Windows Explorer and one via TT Home) just in case. :)

Looking at the file structure of my TT720, I do see a folder labeled "North_America_2GB" and underneath it, there's a sub-folder titled "brand" and 26 other files.

I've downloaded the zip file "NA 710 cspeech files.zip" as well as the "support_asr.zip".

Correct me if I'm wrong but if I want to enable VR on my TT720, do I just delete all the files in my current "North_America_2GB" and replace it with the files that are in the "NA 710 cspeech files.zip" file?

Then, I create a directory called "ASR" and extract the "support_asr.zip" file (which contains a file called "1") into it?

Is that all to it?

Thanks,
David

Post #334 is pretty specific as I tried to compile numerous posts and my experience into "720 VR for Dummies."
Don't use the installation disc that came with the unit as it is an old version. First, register with TT and download the latest TT Home Version 2.5 from their website. Update through TT Home to get Software version 8.30. Once you have that, call up TT customer service and request the latest map guarantee provide you with map 8.15. The files you seek are contained in this map version (I am still uncertain about the file containing the "1" as I created this file myself and installed it as per earlier instructions linked in post #334).

NO!!!

Do not delete any files from the North America Folder! Just ADD the speech files to the folder. And extract the support file to the asr folder.

FOLLOW #334 exactly

cspeeh files are ADDED to north_america_2GB folder, while support_asr.dat is ADDED to ANOTHER folder called ASR.

No deletion in this process.

VR on 720 - How to get the upgrade to work

IF you have a new 720 and are entitled to the map upgrade (V815), you will have to call TT Tech Support. They will give you a e-mail address or fax number to send in a copy of your receipt. Send it in, wait about an hour and call them back. They will then put the free upgrade authorization in your TT HOme account.

Do the upgrade. It will take about 4 hours on a 1 MB line.

TT Home will install the upgrade but NOT the Cspeech files.

Under the download folder in TT Home, you will find the zip folder for North America 2G. Unzip it to another folder. The Cspeech files wil be under the main directory of the new folder. Copy them (all or only the states you will be traveling in) into the North America 2G folder on your TT 720. In the ASR folder, make sure you have the Support_asr. dat file with only a 1 in it.

The VR should work after this.

The VR is very limited but I heard that TT has a new version in Europe that has many more commands. One can only hope.

Willy

Its working, thanks!

thanks to everyone who has contributed. I got my 720 last weekend and was successful yesterday in getting voice to work.
