Voice Recognition on 720 - Discussion

Go720 Speech Recognition - NA 710 Maps -- NOT

Pedro
I went back to TomTom to request the NA 710 maps.

Apparently, they refused to send those to me. They said the only maps available to me were the newest 810 maps at a cost of $129. I see in this forum and others that many people have gotten" stuck" with the same NA 705map version and hence no speech recognition. Questions:

1- Does the NA map ver 810 support the speech recognition functions on the GO720 or not ?
2- If they do, the question then becomes why would I want to add to the cost of my Go720 ? I should have just went out and bought the Go920 where speech recognition is included.
3- Are there any other 3rd party sources for these maps?
4- Can just the speech files be added to the existing NA 705 maps to get it working?

Seems to me that Tom Tom is a very huge rip-off.

1. Yes
2. Only you can answer. The 810 map is more current and supports ALG and IQ routing --- where available.
3. Not legally
4. Sorry, no.

What did you do differently? We need more information to assist.
What map do you have? What version number? What version of the operating system?

try to navigate normal, when your on entering the city, check to see if there is a small voice rwcognition icon near by. Press it to see if it activates the VR

To enable Voice Recognition on your 720 you must need the following:

  • NA Maps 7.10 version with voice recognition files. Here is an example:

    VRfiles.jpg

  • You also need the Firmware 7.221 installed
  • A text file called support_asr.dat with ONLY the number 1 in it.
NOTE: I attached the file. Unzip it and put the file in your ASR folder on the unit.

To use Voice recognition click on the main menu and select 'Navigate to'

Then select 'Address'

You will see 2 Voice Recognition options.

The difference is that the Spoken Address(Dialog) will ask you to state city, address, etc while the other option will not verbally ask you these options.

The next page will take you to this:

I would just like to say many BIG thank Us for this piece of advice. Until reading this post I could not get my v8010 maps and firmware to work with the speech recognition function since updating my device from v741 (it was not greyed out, it simply was not there!). Tech support in the UK were on the verge of recalling my unit which is less than 20 weeks old. They were at a loss as to how to solve the problem. Maybe they should browse these user forums to learn their trade :p Now everything is working as it should be. I'm over the moon. I can't believe that all I needed was to create a .dat file with notepad to solve the problem. It took me 10 seconds to solve a problem that has been ongoing for several months after reading this thread. I am now happy as Larry. Now I'm gonna do a definitive backup of my
TomTom Go 920Tnow everything is in order:D

system Go 920T with v8.010 firmware W&CE & North America Maps v8.010  :D :p

Thanks guys! it works! I did a restore and my favs are gone! :$

DHN what i did is just regular update from TomTom Home!
MAP V8.10 Newest! 138$ !

Thanks

Your favourites (and other settings) are kept in a file called MapSettings.cfg which resides in the specific map folder. Since it appears you have made a backup, simply copy the file from the backed up map folder (such as North_America) to the current map folder on the unit. Favourites should return.

ok then all i do is copy my speech files to my pc
And the support ASR
then upgrade my firmware to 8.10
then upgrade my maps to 8x
Then copy the speech files to NorthAmerica folder
and support ASR to ASR folder
And this will work, anyone tried this I dont want to lose Voice Recog if I do this

Thanks everyone

The firmware is 8.010. Your upgraded 8x map should already have the csspeech.dat files but it is a great idea having the backup, just in case. If VR doesn't work with the map update 'out of the box', then indeed see if the support_asr.dat file is in the asr folder and, if not, copy it from your backup.

Just wanted to say Thanks for this Post. I got mine working. I wish you could do more then just enter an address using the voice commands but I will take every little bit. :)

Well I have just updated mine (just got mine yesterday) won it at a golf tournament; and it is 8.010, but when i go to the address part, it is greyed out, but at least it does have the options there now to speak at it!

What's missing that it won't let me select it...I am kind of reading here, but am at work, I love wasting time at work!!

Use Explorer and see if there is a file in the asr folder on the unit called support_asr.dat with just a 1 in it, no quotes, no carriage returns, nothing else.

If not, create the file using notepad. Make sure the file does NOT get saved as support_asr.dat.txt. If it does, rename it to support_asr.dat.

Put the file in the asr folder on the unit, do a pin reset on the bottom of the unit, and see if VR icons are active, not greyed out.
