Go 5200 withdrawn support for sim

I'm in the UK and I have also received this message, once by email and twice on the device itself (Go 5200), paired with a QR code that led to a support page explaining that the SIM support was ending.
I specifically bought the device so that I didn't have to rely on a second device to provide an internet connection and there was absolutely no indication that the means of getting traffic updates would be changed during the device lifetime. Had that caveat been provided at the point of purchase, I doubt that I would have bought the device.
At the time of writing, the device is still receiving traffic updates via GPRS but I have no idea for how long. Can TomTom at least provide us with a date that the SIM support will end?
Just because you received this message doesn't mean you are affected.

To find out when Tomtom will stop supporting the SIM card, the best thing to do is to ask them directly.

what do the community think about it being illegal for tomtom to remove the sim service whilst vodafone is still providing 2g in the uk. would it be against the consumer rights in the uk for tomotom to do this

For the moment Tomtom has not done it, so wait to see how it evolves.

What I find strange, unless I am mistaken, is that only owners of a GO 5200 and 6200 received this message?

i think my friend who has go premium has now told me that he has also recieved the message.
it is better to try and stop tomtom enacting the sim withdrawel rather than waiting to see what happens. the reason being it is much harder to get a large corporation to undo what they have done rather than stalling them taking action.

but i lack ways how to stop tomtom besides complaining which falls on deaf ears

I just tried asking on Tomtom's support chat and got the attached :s

I've got a GO 5200, used this weekend twice, two three hour drives south of England, no traffic info came on at any point, looks like it's happened :(

Just as info for others even after the ondevice-message, my 5200 is still GPRS connected on 26.12.2024 in germany on:
Appversion: 24.102.003.441 (07.05.2024)
Mapversion: v1140.12535 (9/2024)

We'll see what the new year will bring.
So now I also got that mail after having ondevice message before:

As for now Dec 30th 24 the GPRS SIM still works here in germany, but I'm not very confident it will last very long as in UK the GPRS disabling by TomTom seems to be happening NOW as to be seen in other threads ( even if the mobile-provider still will have the 2G network running for several years).

As far as I know, Tomtom didn't promise you lifetime traffic via the device's SIM card?
It's a long time ago, but I believe they did promise that. Some time before the message telling me about end of SIM support they sent me a marketing email telling me my GO5200 was outdated and encouraging me to buy a new model, with a good discount. I considered that but after seeing all the reports of Tomtoms's abysmal customer service I decided that I won't buy anything more from them. All should be fine if it works well, but if it breaks I've seen so many people struggling with lack of support that it put me off.

Lifetime traffic yes, lifetime SIM card no.

Now if Tomtom decided that the SIM card would be disabled for everyone, Tomtom will do it.

It is not by writing messages on the forum that it will change Tomtom's position.

I can also confirm that GPRS status is now disconnected in the UK. I can also confirm that the WiFi hotspot does work for traffic updates, which is a bit more convenient than Bluetooth.

how does one set up a wifi hotspot for traffic on the tomtom device. please let me know some step by step instructions

You set up a WiFi hotspot on your mobile phone. Procedure will differ by make. Then connect your Tomtom to the hotspot using WiFi.

Very true, but I will vote with my feet as they say, no more TomTom tech in this house....ever!

I have received an email saying that the sim in my Go 5200 will no longer be supported.
i do not have a smartphone to connect to the TomTom and would like to know whether I will still be able to use the Tom Tom for navigation purposes.
Only thing I can think of, if you don't want a smart phone, is a WiFi dongle. These devices are available from most mobile phone companies, just a box with a data SIM card in it, it connects you to the internet. The device puts out a WiFi signal in your home, so anything can connect to that.

Lot of friends of mine can't get broadband up in the hills, so they use one of these, you can also connect laptop, phone -) etc.

Could work out cheaper perhaps, unless you look at the second hand market for a phone like a galaxy Sxxxx they all work.

Today (reluctantly) I had to connect my Tomtom go 6200 and my premium X to this phone that I'm using, it wasn't difficult.

But having paid a lot more for the SIM card version, I've asked trading standards here in the UK, they said the Tomtom must be less than 6 years old before they can do anything. I need to login to tom tom and see when I bought it.

Sorry can't help you further, do have my old phones s23, S22, S10, but don't want to sell them, I know I won't get offered much, so I'll keep as a backup to this S24

Can't think of anything else except that box, don't need a laptop, don't need to be connected to anything except a 12v to 5v power supply for the car, you then can pick low data usage, as the Tomtom won't use much unless there's a map updates and I have 2 on each device, but I'll wait until I'm at home and connected to the home WiFi on my phone, then those units will eventually update, might take a lot longer, but not had a drop out on these phones.

what would happen if i put another sim card inside the tomtom. would that work

The instructions in that link are for a Bluetooth connection, not WiFi hotspot.
No it's not, it uses the phones Bluetooth tethering to provide an internet connection to anything connected to that connection.

This was done twice using Go 6200 and Premium X, read carefully, and the settings might be worded differently. I couldn't find what it said, so I searched and found hotspot tethering, that's not a hot spot providing WiFi the same way.

Normally you set up a hot spot, but they tell you to do it differently via Bluetooth, I've never done this before, but following the instructions, both of my Tomtom units connect to my Samsung S24, it it gives those connections internet access, at home they connect to my routers WiFi via S24, in the car it uses the phones mobile data, that could be a problem if you never had much. I've got too much data, never used much of it, with Amazon Alexa, connecting, just a few Mb
