Go 5200 withdrawn support for sim

Makes me wonder why I have 4 Tomtoms (all bought with lifetime subscriptions to maps, traffic and speed cameras as stand alone devices) when I can use Android Auto and Maps.

I’ve not received any e-mails claiming at some stage TT are to withdraw SIM support for my Go 5100 or Go Premium.

I have two TT6200 and since the last update they are taking ages to find a sat signal, its either about 5 miles or 5 to 8 mins to find a signal, it was working just fine before the update.

I suggested to TT that their dirty tricks dept was at work making it go slow first, and then withdraw support altogether I assume that the idea is to make you but a new one, a bit like Apple with phones.

I was offered the repair at over 100 euro each but as I have two of the TT6200 and both started with the same problem after the update I decided not to bother with the repair and just wait for a signal.

They either have a problem with the last update or its intentional however a new one I will not be buying, shame because this model is the best they ever made
No it isn't. The 1005 was far better. Google search, ability to save favourites in sub folders you could set up yourself, far better mapping. I "upgraded" to the 6200 and was bitterly disappointed.

Just turned on my 6200 and got a screen message that my sim will be disconnected and I must enable Bluetooth data via my phone. I don't have a problem with phone data usage , but I have multiple Bluetooth connections on my phone (headset, car infotainment, OBD dongle) and I run Waze alongside Tomtom. Not sure if I can add another device, but that's not the main problem. Suddenly changing our agreement is the problem. I bought the device with the promise of supporr for the life of the device. I am not impressed and won't be buying another. This is my 5th Tomtom device, I go back to the clunky old PDAs.

As far as I know, Tomtom didn't promise you lifetime traffic via the device's SIM card?

Rather than taking TomTom's advice - why they get tunnel vision about using Bluetooth is an absolute mystery to me - set your phone up as a WiFi hotspot and make the connection to your 6200 that way instead. Your 6200 will be perfectly happy with WiFi rather than Bluetooth.

In general, WiFi has been a more reliable connection (especially vs. Apple's Bluetooth stacks), and won't add any confusion to any existing Bluetooth connections.

For what it's worth, this approach is good for any x20, x200, Premium, Essential, Supreme, Bridge or other TomTom device that supports WiFi connections.

I'm also wondering who in the UK will be our guinea pig for one of these:

it seems like it is related to the 5200 and 6200. can anyone confirm that it is only these models where the sim card is being deactivated as opposed to newer models that still operate based on the sim card inside them

Since many previous models do not have Bluetooth, TT cannot use the argument that you can connect with Bluetooth.
And the newer models no longer have a SIM.

Not quite, before the GO 5200/6200 there was the GO 5100/6100, after the GO 5200/6200 there was the GO premium and the premium X, all these GPS have Bluetooth and an integrated SIM card.

so for example the GO premium and the premium X, all these GPS have Bluetooth and an integrated SIM card
are the sim cards of these also being disabled?

Nice christmas present TomTom, I also got message on my 5200 device itself all together with a QR code.

It's interesting as Vodafone here in germany will not discountinue its 2G service before 2030(!!) https://www.heise.de/news/Mobilfunk-2028-schaltet-die-Telekom-ihr-GSM-Netz-ab-9990800.html

So far I declined the message and it seems to still be working with SIM so far. But if it will be disabled I will use WIFI hotspot instead of bluetooth.

BUT then there will be no more reason to stay with TomTom and I will switch to Garmin.

Before you switch, be sure you've investigated the difference in Garmin's traffic offerings vs. those of TomTom. That's the one place that TomTom still seems to have an advantage.

why is tomtom turning this service off if vodafone uk or in other counties the 2g service continues

not yet deactivated but i got that message with the qr code that support will be withdrawn. i have a friend in the uk that has a premium go and he just updated me that he hasn't had that message yet

Just as info for others even after the ondevice-message, my 5200 is still GPRS connected on 26.12.2024 in germany on:
Appversion: 24.102.003.441 (07.05.2024)
Mapversion: v1140.12535 (9/2024)

We'll see what the new year will bring.

I'm curious. What was your original (and current) understanding of the word "Lifetime" in this context?

Also, has anyone had a look at these, or similar?

I'm in the UK and I have also received this message, once by email and twice on the device itself (Go 5200), paired with a QR code that led to a support page explaining that the SIM support was ending.
I specifically bought the device so that I didn't have to rely on a second device to provide an internet connection and there was absolutely no indication that the means of getting traffic updates would be changed during the device lifetime. Had that caveat been provided at the point of purchase, I doubt that I would have bought the device.
At the time of writing, the device is still receiving traffic updates via GPRS but I have no idea for how long. Can TomTom at least provide us with a date that the SIM support will end?
