Tomtom and Google

I read the first post in this thread and it says that you can save a route in google as an itinerary. Does anyone know how to do this? I couldn't figure it out on the google maps site.

You can enter starting and ending points, then move the line around the map with your mouse. Be sure to nudge the starting and ending points. Then you find the link. It's the link you need to enter into the program on the web page discussed early in the thread.

Everything you need to know is on the page linked in the first post.

I have used this feature. When my One plans the route....it is completely different from the route I planned out in google and loaded to my itinerary. Any help?

Perhaps the way points added are too far apart. What you might try to do is place the way points much closer together restricting TT's routings to freely choose its route.

google map route

Here's the problem.. I use google maps to get from point a to point b. Then I customize the route to what i want. Then I start to add destination points, but it screws up the route. It takes me to the end of the route, then back to the points. A 1 hour route turns into 4 hours. Any help?

I'm having trouble with the first step. I can't find this link.

Click on the "Link to this page" link at the top left of the GoogleMaps map

I think your destination is at the top of your list. You want to move the destination below all the waypoints. Tapping the destination will allow you to move it down or you can delete it and then add it as the last step.

Just bought a ONE XL and was looking for a way to plan a random route for taking a motorcycle ride. Thanks to Google Maps and this ITN script, this is so easy to do. My thanks to the author of the script. This is exactly what I was hoping could be done. It works perfectly!

I am having the same problem. I am sure I am doing everything correctly. Yet when I load the itinerary, my TT One v3 just calculates a route on its own. Here's another part of the mystery: Houghi says on his website:

"Generally, using the shortest route-calculation will give you the best results. However, when you want to avoid motorways or optimize a route for cycling or walking this is usually possible as well."

Why would I need to choose the shortest route (or any route) when I have already made a route?

BTW, I have already customized my menu to show the lost Itinerary feature that the One v3 is famous for, so I know that's not the problem

Excuse me if this question seems stupid.

You did hack your TT menu to add back the missing Itinerary button, right?

Just out of the box, the TT One 3rd Ed will not do an itinerary even though we have an itinerary folder on the device.

That's because the itenerary isn't actually a complete "route", it's just a series of waypoints which you pass through. Google and TomTom each use their own algorithms to calculate which roads to take between those points, and they may be different. And depending on which of the routing options you choose on the TomTom, you may get different results as well.

I used this technique to plan a 150 mile trip awhile ago and it worked great. But the actual file only contained about 6 waypoints. Everything that happened between those points was the choice of my TomTom and not Google.

This feature does not seem to work with TT Home for the Mac. :(

This feature really has nothing to do with either the Mac or TomTom Home.

Google Maps works fine in Mac browsers so as long as your TomTom supports the Itinerary option, it should work.

Please Help- having trouble with routing from Google to my tomtom

Hello,

I'd love someone to offer me step by step help with tranfering my route from google maps to my tomtom 920. I went to Houghi.org's website and following the instructions exactly. I was able to map my route, get the coordinates and paste the URL to his website. It created a zip file + .ITN file with my route.

I plugged my tomtom 920 into my computer and nothing happened. I went to Itinerary Planning and no .ITN folder exists or was created. I tried opening the files and both files came up with messages that windows couldn't read them. ( something about needing a php document reader?). I am using Windows XP.

I'm pretty new at computer stuff so if anyone can give me help, please do it step by step. If you suggest I copy the .itn file to my tomtom memory card, I don't know how to do that. I know I have the capability on my tomtom since there is an Itinerary Planning icon there.

So, I'm stuck with having downloaded the files to my desktop but not knowing how to copy them to my tomtom.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks

Go to Main Menu>Itinerary Planning>Options>Load Itinerary

There you should see the file you created and be able to load it.

This should help too

Boyd...thanks. That turned the bulb on.

Routing from google doesn't match in tomtom routes, HELP!

So I figured out how to move the .itn file into my tomtom 920 after building my itinerary in google maps, selecting my waypoints and using Houghi's program.

The problem is: after all of that work, when I finally downloaded the file into my tomtom and browsed the route, the route that tomtom pulled up was TOTALLY different than the route on google. Even with inputing all of my waypoints in between so that it would stay on a certain path, the roads it recommends in my tomtom are totally off my intended route.

I have tried everything I can think of to manually install points on the route so that tomtom would be made to go the way I want to go, and it still doesn't offer me the route I want.

What am I missing ? Does the TYRE program work for 920s and would that be a better program to try with google maps?

Thanks for any help.

I think you just need to add more waypoints that guide the route to where you want it to be. I've read that there's really no set number for this, so just keep adding as many as it takes! Good luck!
