Go 6200 lifetime SIM

FYI:
On average, driving for one hour a day during peak hours consumes about 7MB of data per month.
That's not a lot.

If you don't connect, the only problem is traffic.
The speed cameras are installed on the GPS map after the update.
Still not good when Tom Tom sell a unit and state does not require phone linking or aerial for traffic as built in SIM card does it for you!
This is miss-selling and false selling!

Tomtom customer service should tell you that. ;)

After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical support, or security patches for Windows 10.

What are you going to do? Sue Microsoft?

That’s different!
Microsoft offer free updates like Windows 11 and is software!
Tom Tom units are hardware and always offer updates on software.

Yeah, great, for those computers with hardware that is acceptable to Windows 11, and many older ones do NOT qualify.
So many computers running Windows are now EOL, too.

Still not the point!
If you bought a computer that had a Wi-Fi system built in meaning no need for a cable anymore then you should have Wi-Fi and not then be told they are shutting down the Wi-Fi system and you must now go and buy a cable to plug into the Wi-Fi router!

Fine. Report back to us any progress.

Tomtom sends messages in bulk, so even those who are not concerned receive the message.
As long as 2G is available in your country, your SIM card will not be deactivated.
Thats not true. They have just deactivated my sim.

And they have now told me that the only way to get traffic is to tether to phone!
Sold a paper weight as it is now no use as intended and as sold!
Yes I know I can use it as I have data on my phone but the unit was sold to do everything and not have any need to link to something.

Bad customer service and a scam to get people to buy a unit and not deliver on it.

I'm always mystified when I see this statement with regard to this issue.

Buying a new unit leaves you in exactly the same situation you're in now - having to use WiFi or Bluetooth to get the data feed. None of the newer units have cellular capability, either.

So what incentive have they provided to "buy a unit"?

What mystifies me is how knowledgeable people desperately defend a blatant injustice rather than guiding the victims into filing a class action.

Sheridan did not say "new unit". We are complaining about this unit (6200). It was advertised and sold as having this unique feature - communication independence forever - which was priceless. I bet most customers did not buy a newer model exactly because of this 6200 precious feature. As of today, it is completely possible for the SIM card to be used for traffic because 2G will be supported for a looong time is most places. The injustice comes from the fact that TomTom:
1. unilaterally broke their promise and stopped the traffic service over the SIM cards for no technical reason and
2. started lying to their customers that the SIM cards were technically obsolete vaguely referring to the 2G standard.
It is simple as that - undefendable.

About the Microsoft analogy attempt - Microsoft never advertised lifetime support for anything. They have EOL roadmaps for every product since its release. I personally hate how short these roadmaps have become lately but at least they never change their mind halfway.

Tomtom also did not announce a lifetime SIM card.

Now if you want to sue Tomtom, do so.

Because a) all but Willy here are in North America - we have zero standing in the matter since we lost our cellular connection a couple of years ago when 2G died, and b) for the same reason, we haven't a clue what a class action suit would look like anywhere in Europe, and c) class action suits are notorious (here) for providing the vast majority of the settlement money to the lawyers, even in Europe, and even when the defendant has VERY deep pockets (see "Mr. Bates vs the Post Office" - and Bates is STILL trying to collect from the government).

And most of us aren't defending it. We're explaining to you how we've been dealing with the technical issue for years here on the other side of the pond and in Aus/NZ. It's the only solution available. If you don't like that solution, that's fine, but our job is to provide technical support, not find you a brief for your lawsuits.

When you see something that claims “you no longer need an aerial cable or connection to Wi-Fi and smartphone to get live services including traffic due to the units internal SIM card doing this for you” then:
1. You do not need an extra cable
2. You do not need to link to Wi-Fi or phone

It is that simple! It was advertised as not requiring it!

Yes you are here to offer technical advice but it is very evident that Tom Tom sold these units claiming as such then switching if the SIM card capability.

In the UK we still have 2g so my unit should still work as advertised and as sold but they have blatantly taken this facility away!

Problem is all newer units now only work via tethering. But to all customers like myself buying into this claim as advertised and as sold this should still be upheld AND if only on a particular network then should offer upgraded sim to work on other network if switching off!

It’s like British Telecomm or BT saying they are upgrading lines to make things better and they start at the beginning of the system and that causes faults to millions of homes. They should start at the consumer end first and ensure future proof before changing things.

Repeating the same arguement ad nauseam does nothing. We get that you are disappointed ... nothing is going to change in your favour okay, so move on.
What's happened, has happened, end of!

I paid for a machine 6200 with lifetime maps and sim support. The change was never mentioned when purchasing. Tomtom should stay with the contract they offered!!

Don’t bother!
They keep telling me to tether to phone!
They will not help!
