Battery charging

The problem arises if your GPS is plugged directly into the car's USB port.
A car's USB port doesn't provide enough power to keep a GPS charged.
what sort of amps does it need then as these reading i get on my display in what the GPS is drawing etc from the car connection

You say that if you charge it from the mains, your GPS stays on.
So the problem lies with your car charger.

Now you decide whether you want to buy a car charger or a new GPS.

well that may not solve the issue??....so i could be buying another item and they wont make any change at all??
My car has a 12 Volt Battery and the GPS should only draw the current it wants and no more so not sure even that remark works as being true???

No there is no tom tom charger as i am plugged into the car system so that is charging it, but i do get the same situation just on its own say running for indoors from my laptop
I've noted twice now that neither your laptop nor a vehicle USB data port is typically designed to produce more than 500mA of current. Especially on a Live model that requires a bit more current than normal, that can be a problem. Even the battery has 4 power wires (2+ and 2-) instead of the 2 of some lesser models.

Please find the cigarette lighter adapter that came with your TomTom, or an equivalent one capable of at least 1A output, and plug into that and see if that changes the behavior.

they are linked in circuits V=I x r
Ohm's law is pretty irrelevant here. The voltage is fixed at 5V. The current draw of the device is what it is (and that varies with its operating state, including screen brightness, data activity, etc.), and the max current that can be supplied by a particular USB outlet is what IT is.

USB-B connections are always current limited, and those operating as concurrent data connections are typically limited to 500mA.

when i have spoken to tom tom themselves they are useless have no ideal of resolution and all they want to do is sell sell sell, they dont deal with real issues when help is required.

I'm willing to be they've suggesting using the OEM equipment for charging, too. That's their FIRST suggestion from the script when charging problems are brought to them.
