Built in SIM cards

This is ridiculous.

When I bought my TomTom it said that I would be connected to TomTom Traffic even when driving abroad, no charge. "TomTom includes data so you wont have to worry about roaming-fees".

This was the entire reason for my purchase since I frequently drive in Europe through different countries.

Scam-company.

Because as I just mentioned "When I bought my TomTom it said that I would be connected to TomTom Traffic even when driving abroad, no charge." and now they changed it so that I have to pay for the data roaming.

No, nothing has changed, your SIM card is still active.
If in your country 2G is still available.
if it is not, contact Tomtom to reactivate it for you

For your information, it is not Tomtom that deactivates 2G and therefore your SIM card, but the telephone operator.

Did you even read my post?

"Important information about your TomTom navigator
Your TomTom device GO 6200 will soon lose support for the built-in SIM card, which means you will no longer be able to receive TomTom Traffic via your built-in SIM card.

You can still receive TomTom Traffic and its services by connecting your TomTom GO 6200 to your smartphone via wireless Bluetooth® technology."

Hence changing the "TomTom includes data so you wont have to worry about roaming-fees" so that I now need to pay the roaming-fees.

It is the operator who deactivates the SIM cards, not Tomtom

For the moment, you should ignore this message sent by Tomtom.

It’s not just data usage for the connected phone that bothers me because that is pretty minor. We have two people using our car. Both of their phones need to be connected to the TomTom, which is fine. But everytime we switch between one of the two people using the car (and the TomTom), we need to manually switch phones in the TomTom (main menu, settings, bleutooth, switch phones). This is such a hassle since I often use the car in the morning and my girlfriend uses it in the afternoon so we have to manually switch twice a day. On top of that, support told me that you can’t switch when you’ve already planned a trip so you have to cancel the trip, manually switch to the correct phone and replan the trip. This happens quite a lot since we’re not really used to having to switch this manually every single time. It’s a big step back from how it was on older TomToms.

But seriously… reading this thread I kind of understand TomTom’s reasoning for ditching the built in SIM card but if you do that, at least make the thing smart enough to have it automatically switch between phones. Or at the very least make it easy to switch, don’t burry it in the settings menu which can’t even be reached if you’ve already planned a trip.

I got an email today, that TomTom will no longer support the built-in Simcard of my GO5200. I think that is ridiculous. Why delete the key feature of a device that works great? (Yeah money of course, but what about clientservice?). They offered lifetime traffic updates via the Simcard, and now they stop it. I am very annoyed!!
I received a similar message a few days ago but do not have a smartphone to link to the TomTom. They have said my sim slot needs repairing at a cost of 105€ but if they are not supporting SIM cards I am a bit confused as to why they are offering a repair!

OK I also received an official email from TomTom followed by the same information on my GO 5200 device that the SIM card service is about to be terminated and that I shall revert to use a mobile phone for traffic updates. I live in Denmark where we have not yet stopped the 2G service so I have filed a support complaint requiring TomTom to extend the SIM card service on my specific device - because I bought this with full Life-time support for all services.

*) Lifetime means the device's functional lifetime; the period during which TomTom supports your device with updates, services, content or accessories.
A device has reached the end of its useful life when none of these are available anymore.

IMHO the only two things that can stop the SIM card based roaming service is if 2G is closed down by the local tele-operator or if TomTom deliberately stops paying the tele-operator for the 2G SIM card data transfer.

If TomTom deliberately stops paying for the 2G SIM card data transfer, then they are breaking the contract with users having paid for full Life-time service and if that is the case I have asked for a full refund!

I doubt this is an error from TomTom - I mean both e-mail and device notification must be a deliberate action from TomTom. Willy875 states that TomTom cannot deactivate a SIM card - fair enough - but they can stop paying for mobile data - and then the tele-operator will surely deactivate the SIM card - right?

Apart from the official mail has anyone received official info regarding this matter from TomTom?

Well done Tomtom, there are many other navigation options that use phone data, why should I have to use my phone data to receive live traffic and Speed Camera info when I bought a Tomtom device that promised me these services for LIFETIME via the inbuilt sim. I expect Tomtom to honour this commitment until my device dies and needs to be replaced , or, more likely, Tomtom will brick it via a software update. Either way this is the last Tomtom I will have bought.

Seems like same complaint, different threads - several of them.

I don't recall that you were promised lifetime services delivered by cellular connection. Good luck. They can't even promise a lifetime (whatever you choose to take that to mean) cellular connection, as has become fairly obvious over recent years.

Let us know how you get on. Meanwhile, it seems that most TomTom users with 5x00 and 6x00 devices still have functional cellular service where 2G is still available.

WE WERE PROMISED LIFE TIME SUPPORT of traffic data via built-in SIM card!

And yes I still have SIM based traffic info on my device - 2G is still working in Denmark and will be doing so for the next 5-6 years - at least. So why am I complaining - well...

I think it is dubious to send a mail like this to customers:
"Important update about your TomTom GPS
Your GO 5200 is reaching the end of built-in SIM support, which means that you will soon no longer be able to receive TomTom Traffic via your built-in SIM card."

Why will any serious company send out a vague warning like this with-out a final end date - it's like if the electricity company wrote to me telling me that in the near future they will no longer supply electricity" - and the text is indicating between the lines that the termination of this SIM based services was something we should all know would come some time in 2025 - what is this?

is it just a test balloon to see if they can shut down the service - and save a buck - with-out too many customer complaints or do they really not know when the SIM cards become "inactive".

This is really bad customer care! Therefore send in your complaints ASAP. The only e-mail I could dig up for this is: (e-mail address removed)

Sadly the the initial response from them (received only via support messages after logging in on my TomTom web account on TomTom.com:
"I would like to inform you that this channel is dedicated to General Product and safety regulations and we have limited expertise to check the details of your device. To get assistance regarding your query, please visit https://help.tomtom.com/hc/articles/360015568919-How-to-contact-TomTom-support."

Great stalling-response because the above link also refers back to the exact same email address: (e-mail address removed) to be used in case you don't get an answer from their marvelous chat-bot. To me chat-bots are DEAD ENDS so I did not even try to engage with this and sent off an email right away )

Go complaining !

But TomTom didn't write when I bought it that the SIM card would expire after a few years!
And the fact is that my SIM was deactivated exactly 4 weeks after the email from TomTom. Just like many others here in Germany.
I'm also no longer able to contact TT because the bot no longer allows questions about the SIM.
