TomTom Model(s)
GO 50
Hi all,

My wife and I bought a TomTom Go 50 because of its popularity and we were moving from Georgia to New Mexico and wanted the extra added assistance if we ran into issues along the way.

We do not use Windows computers in our home but use Linux Mint (Ubuntu derivative.) I understand that TomTom does not support Linux, but we installed Windows 7 into a VirtualBox VM and the device will download all the updates, but when it tries to update the TomTom device, it says Connection Lost, please try again...

We have several other USB devices that work without issue doing this method. Is there some way to get this to work?

We would hate to have to return it, but if we can't update the device, it is of no use to us. As it stood, we had to rely on our cell phones and Google Maps to get us to New Mexico - which, btw, worked like a champ and I ended up only using .2 gb of data (Yeah, that’s POINT 2) during a 3 day trip driving 10 hrs a day :).

Quite honestly, its kind of pointless, this day and age, to have a dedicated GPS device as the are commonly found on every phone and wrist watch device out there, but we figured it would be nice to have on for the rare occasion we are outside of cell data range.

In either case, if we can't update it using our setup, we will simply return the device, so any help anyone can offer will save the company a $200 sale - and quite possibly allot more as word of mouth can make or break a company these days ;).

Thanks!
Joe

They use a very convoluted ppp-over-ethernet-over-USB setup, that barely works on Windows. Getting all the convoluted stuff on a VM box in Linux is likely to be a nightmare.

I'd recommend returning it. You get most of the same features on GO Mobile for Android and same ability to navigate without a data connection, so I don't see a need for a separate PND either.

I use Google maps extensively as it has much better urban road routing than Tomtom. Tomtom GO Mobile has better long distance highway routing, and works in rural areas between cities where there is no data connection, so I use it more on long trips.

Hi MVL,

Thanks for the reply! We really appreciate it and will look into the GO app for the Android.

Joe
