TomTom Model(s)
6200
I have used Tomtom devices for decades and when I buy one for myself I get my wife and son one, with them having a SIM card there is not one “new” Tomtom can device that has the built in SIM card but quite expensive units with a £35 per year subscription or monthly etc
I can’t see me buying any other devices from Tomtom I think the service when it stops I can use Bluetooth to connect but if Tomtom can verify this I will be grateful if I have to pay I will have to look elsewhere

Tomtom when my 6200 unit SIM cards go off can I use all the services I currently get free but over Bluetooth? Or will I be switched off until I pay an annual tariff TIA

Yes, via Bluetooth you continue to receive traffic and speed camera information for free.

We lost 2G service here in North America a while back. Looks like you've still got a while to go on GPRS service in the UK.

I prefer WiFi rather than Bluetooth for the connection to my phone. Especially for those with Apple phones with certain generations of iOS, the WiFi connection may prove more stable/reliable. I also supply (concurrently) two different TomTom devices with traffic data using WiFi.

Thanks that is a relief what about map updates can I get them updated for free still. I often switch between UK USA and Australia
Cellular service has nothing to do with maps - those you can get over WiFi, and your 6200 has enough memory capability that maps won't be a problem for a long time.

Thanks are they still free to upgrade when my lifetime sim gets switched off. I travel to USA and Oz annually just needed to know I can still get the maps updated after the live services are off

You bet. The regular WiFi update mechanism of the 6200 will continue to work. USA and Oz have already had our 2G services shut down completely a bit ago, so you'll want to connect via your phone for traffic in either of those locations.

Does it have to be via Bluetooth? - Can I turn on the WiFi hotspot on my mobile and connect to the WiFi to achieve the same result?

I am in the same position as @Tomtommad but I have an issue with connecting my TomTom to my mobile via Bluetooth as I currently use Bluetooth connect the mobile to the handsfree system in the car.

From what I can see I cannot connect two Bluetooth devices at the same time.

Yes I am aware that I can pair the Bluetooth to the phone and use the phone handsfree through the TomTom - I tried this when I first got the TomTom but my phone will not always cope with it - it works fine until sometimes someone rings and then the phone throws a wobbly - not good when you are in the middle of trying to navigate through central London etc.
The ending of built in Sim support really does seem like a backward step to me.

Yes, you can definitely use WiFi rather than Bluetooth, and if you have an Apple phone, odds are that WiFi is going to be a more stable connection. I always have at least two TomTom devices being fed traffic data via WiFi from my phone at any given time.

Thanks - any idea when SIM support is actually being withdrawn in the UK? I had the email today to say that it was 'reaching the end' but no mention of any dates

I shouldn't think it will occur until the provider that TT is using shuts down their 2G service. That's the thing - it's not a question of when the last man standing is providing 2G there, it's when TT's provider (Vodafone) shuts down 2G.

So far, who's doing what when is entirely up in the air, with only the 2033 date hanging out there as the 'final final' date. Due to the way bandwidth is being re-used, it was easier to predict 3G shutdowns!

United Kingdom
  • EE – Closing before December 2033
  • Vodafone UK / Three UK – Closing before December 2033
  • O2 – Closing before December 2033

Same here in bui

Same here in built up areas it will struggle the sim removal is a backward step they should redo and use lte or 4g in just 1 model to give people the option I can only connect 1 Bluetooth and I guarantee there is an update or callers cannot hear me and the tomtom resets. I have so many 6200 units in reps and trainers cars/vans it's a backward move Tomtom, listen to your customers. Inclusive live services is why I bought them. I have been offered 40% discount on new tomtom s but it's a big no.

More to the point, perhaps - if you depend upon access to custom POI (*.ov2) files for your use model, you dare not move beyond the 6200's. That was the last generation that supported custom POI files!

NOW I didn't know that. I have some poison for some clinics as all hospitals are in I have about 12 custon poi in each of our units. Thank you very much for that info. Why would TT stop custom poi do you think it was to generate business from custom speed cameras??
I only used the TT ones all my custom pois are for my job hence sim installed live services many thanks

@Tomtommad

As Willy notes, you can still add individual locations as 'favorites'. A dozen or so of those won't be a problem since they won't be a management problem, nor will they be a huge screen clutter.

It's when you get into larger and more varied lists that not having access to the custom POI feature file is a huge problem. For example, if you needed every clinic and hospital in the country organized by specialty, things would get difficult.

Alert to travellers driving outside of their ISP area.
Check if you will incur roaming fees and the charges for same.
My ISP here in Canada charges $10.00/day with breaks if ordered per week or month ahead of time. (Others and I have been charged while driving on the Canadian side of the Niagara Parkway when the GPS switched to a stronger US signal.)

Call me an old cynic but I get the impression that the email sent out by TT with no mention of an actual date - or even 'by the end of' date was designed to try and panic people into buying a new product.

It seems your TomTom Live SIM for the 6200 model is nearing its expiration, and you're likely wondering about renewal options. Consider contacting TomTom support to confirm whether the "lifetime" services can be extended or if a new SIM or subscription is needed. They might offer a special plan or upgrade path to maintain live traffic and other connected services for uninterrupted navigation.
