TomTom Classic Go 5
My Go Classic 5 is only two years old and I am Quite well versed in electrical theory but it is having problems that I can't understand when connected to car charging port but not with mains power. I have a number of adapters and also tried different cars etc but it doesn't always charge and it doesn't always detect the engine being switched off. But on mains it is working.

Like I say it's only two years old and I'm gutted. Any ideas?

A USB port in a car does NOT provide sufficient power to charge the device. Are you using the cable that came with the device?

Hi I've tried the original and other leads. It always use to work and as soon as I switched the engine off it would know but something's not right now. My phone and dashcam are working and the TomTom works from mains? I can't understand it???

Hi
Use a cigarette lighter charger instead of plugging it into the car's USB port.

That is what I'm doing. I bought a new one today. I just tested the cigarette lighter port and I'm getting 13v+ I can't understand this.

On the USB socket at the output of the cigarette lighter charger it is 5v maximum
13v is at the output of the socket on your car.

Have you looked in the System Settings then Battery Settings.

If you say that on the mains your GPS charges but that on the car you have charging problems, then either it is your cigarette lighter socket on the car that has a problem, or it is your charger which is provided in the GPS box that has a problem.

Well I've tried different cars with same different adapters and different cables etc always the same Then plug it into mains and it's ok ?

I believe the elephant in the room is the docking device.
Charges fine on mains source = no docking device.
Refuses to charge on any combination of cable/adapter in vehicle = docking device.

On GO Classic there is no support for the mini USB socket, it connects directly to the GPS.

It's another one of those dreaded "TomTom re-used the name" problems. There are a bunch of different generation GO CLASSIC models. I don't remember what the back sides of all of them look like.

There are a couple of different GO Classic versions out there that you might have purchased within the last two years. You say you've had yours for a couple of years. By any chance does your serial number start with G3, G4, G5 or instead star with X5, X7 ?

Yes that's it.

it's charging intermittently on car charger. One particular cigarette adapter works best but the other adapters work with other devices and have been working with the TomTom for ages etc can't understand it.

Just add, It died on me while driving this is when I first knew there was a problem.
Always preferred TomTom to Google maps etc. Anyway keep an old TomTom in the boot as a backup - this thing has been bashed around etc probably at least 10 years old. Love this thing but it can't be updated. Got me to my destination no problems.

Question when you charge it on the mains do you use the same cable as when you charge it in the car?

Maybe a bad contact have you tried moving the mini plug that connects to the GPS?

Yeah same cable etc. It's a mystery.

I'm wondering if it's some kind of software fault instead of hardware. But I guess that would be known about.

Long and short - can I get it repaired and where etc.

Finally off topic is there anyway to update the old TomTom unofficially like some kind of hack etc

To have your GPS repaired you must contact Tomtom support if your GPS is no longer under warranty this will cost you €105.

If it is to update a map Tomtom no longer publishes maps for old GPS so you will not find recent maps.
