There is a bug in the software patching process on Tomtom HOME. If you update anything other than the second-newest or newest firmware version on an XXL, it will appear to brick the device.
If I remember properly, the difficulty is getting the device to connect to a computer. Try the following:
Connect the Tomtom into a mains charger. Hold the power button forever, it will play drumrolls and reboot, but don't let go of the power button. Eventually it should go to a black debug screen with white writing. When you see this screen you can let go of the power button.
Then disconnect from the mains charger and plug into computer USB. Then hold the power button again until you hear the drums and then let go. Hopefully this time it will connect to the computer and be recognized as a USB drive.
Once this happens, use winrar and extract the contents of the link below onto the device's drive (overwriting if prompted).
http://download.tomtom.com/sweet/navcore/9.061.xxl2009.CAB-navcore-XXL.cab
Then wait until the X on the Tomtom screen disappears (meaning the copy is complete), then unplug. The devices should reboot and start up.
If so, connect to Tomtom HOME and accept the update to the latest software.
