Strange directions

The funniest directions I remember was going to a Gas Station on the way home one night. I plugged into "Travel Via" a station on the road on the route home from a PIO. The station is on the left side of the road. The road is a two lane road but at the intersection where the staion is there is a Left turn lane, straight lane and a right turn lane.

Mandy told me to "TURN RIGHT, THEN, TURN AROUND".

I just turned left into the station. :D

There are areas in any major city where one is unfamiliar with the local roads. Last Fall, I had gone on the South shore of Montreal and was going back home. That route is familiar to me but one highway had been blocked and had to get off in a traffic jam. That area is hard to drive around as there are 2 perpendicular highways, a canal (not all streets have bridges over it) and a railroad running East-West. Since the East Bound highway was blocked, I thought I would try my luck at using the service road in the West bound direction. It did run parallel to the highway but not for long. It eventually headed North which is where I wanted to go eventually. Unfortunately it ended in a dead end and I had to backtrack to the traffic jam. I eventually made it home but, instead of 20 minutes, it took 1:15. Had I had my XL-S, I'm sure I would have avoided most of the delay.

Observation fastest vs. shortest route.
The following is some thing we can only compare if we know the area well.
From where I live to our Live Steam track is an almost straight North then straight West drive of 35 minutes (10 over in order not to delay other traffic).
If I tell 'Jane' fastest route she'll direct my via a 10 km longer but 3 minutes faster route (20 over in order not to delay other traffic).
If I tell her shortest route she'll zig-zag me past residential areas and 40 km/k School Zones (0 over because speeding tickets get handed out for stupidity in a 40 zone), saving 5 km over my normal route but sends me there in an hour and 10 minutes.

In order to get her to select my route I have to tag Avoid Freeways.
I wonder what is happening when we make selections in unknown areas.

Has anyone got Tyre to work with Google Maps (not Earth) and if yes, for .ov2 rather than .itn files? I cannot get HOUGHI to work at all. Maybe I should find my copy of IE and try it as I only end up with half a page of garbled text when I enter the "Link to this page." with houghi open in Firefox.

Yes, I've been using Tyre with Google map for couple of weeks maybe, mostly playing tih itns though. But yes, just rechecked and it works for POI's as well. I dont know what HOUGHI is though.

I can open POIs but not make them with Google maps. Guess I haven't read the instructions properly.
Click on this houghi link. According to an English list it seems to be preferable to Tyre for ITNs.

I see that, and it certainly did look fairly easy, but I didn't really look to close since Tyre seems to work pretty well for me. Though I've actually been using POI edit some for POI's as well. To use Tyre, you create your waypoints like you were creating an Itenary, then from the Tyre file menu, choose convert to TomTom POI.

Well, I still have trouble finding that new ov2 when operating HOME.

I made an itn file and let Tyre convert it to ov2 category. The file shows in Tyre and in Windows Explorer but it does not show at Navigate to > Point of interest > POI near you > Any POI catgory.
Typing in the name of that ov2 creates a search and finally "POI not found".

It would be nice if I could take a Google map, make a destination, drag the route to custom points and then convert it to a POI.

Arno,

I didn't use HOME - After creating the ov2 in Tyre, I used Windows explorer to copy the file to my USA-Canada map directory. The ov2 file needs to end up on the TomTom in the map directory that youre using.

Rick, I had another look at it. It doesn't matter if WExplorer or Tyre is used to move the file to the appropriate (map to be used) folder.
I either case, the ov2 ends up in the right spot. The reason why I couldn't find it using Home was that I was tapping for a POI. I went Navigate to > Point of Interest > Point in city > "click City name" > Any POI category. When now typing the name of the POI HOME would make a search and report No POI found.

I now found I should have looked for a POI category by going Navigate to > Point of Interest > Point in city > "click City name" > click the right arrow (next page) and select POI category.

It hadn't sunk in thatthe ov2 is not a POI but a category.
