SD card questions

Sorry if this is a repeat of questions asked earlier. I did a search but didn't find the answers to my questions. So here we go:

I have a TT 720 I purchased in June and used to great effect on a trip to the midwest.

My wife and I are about to travel to New Zealand and I want to bring my TT along as we will be doing a lot of driving. I understand that I can put maps on an SD card and that I need to put the TT operating info on the SD card as well. I will be DLing the NZ map from TomTom.

Do I need a separate SD card reader to get the info onto the SD card, or will just putting the card into the slot on the 720 while it is attached to my computer do the trick?

I have a 2GB card. Do I need to format it somehow? It is brand new.

Also, and this is a little off the SD topic, will the TT charge properly off the battery in our rental car in New Zealand?

Thank's for your help!

That's for your help!

1- You don't need to copy the operating system to the SD card on GO models, you only need to do that on ONE models.

2- GO models have a better USB standard than ONE models so data transfers are faster but I always recommend using a good SDHC card reader since they are so cheap (5$ and up).

3- A brand new SD card normally does not need to be formatted. Just transfer data to it and check how your TT recognises it.

4- Never went to NZ but expect the cigar lighter outlet to be compatible with the rest of the world with 12V DC.

Like Gilbert mention, you don't need the operating system files in the card but u do need some files.

Insert your new card to your 720 and start up HOME.
The TomTom will ask which you wish to use (say the SD card)
Go ahead and let it update (it will place the mp3, voices folder on the card along with a couple of other files)

Then you can use both internal memory and SD card simultaneously and add your New Zealand map to the SD card.

TT 720 won't recognize my SD card

Nevermind...found the solution. FYI, an 8 gb high capacity SD card is on special at Best Buy for $39. Works like a charm in the 720.

Michael....

x20 and x30 models seem to have no issues with SanDisk Ultra II sdhc cards. I also know one user who has success with a 16, yes 16, gig card. The problems with TT's not writing to over 4 gigs is well documented, though.

I just use the SanDisk Ultra II 4 gig, myself. Don't know the brands the others use.

Follow-up: I ordered that combo from NewEgg.

If it doesn't work in the 720, it's probably time to replace my venerable ?GB thumbdrive.

When I first attach the 720 w/16GB card to Home, I see two blinking icons as it connects--the new one I'm guessing is for the SD. But that ask me which to use -step is not occurring.

However, I've created an "mp3" & a "voices" folder on the card, using the reader. The music files that I dragged into the former are fully visible in the Tom's jukebox. And when I uploaded several bulky Computer Voices, instead of prompting me to remove content, it happily transferred them, presumably onto the SD card.

The weird part is, I seem to have NO way to access the SD when it's inside the TomTom. Windows explorer just shows the unit's own "mp3" older, which is now empty. Good thing I shelled out the extra six bucks for the reader.

With Home running and the unit connected, does not Home's menu option of Device-->Switch device work?

Last time I checked, it was disabled, but I'll look again when I dock to Home.

I do know the unit is mounting the SD, since the music & document files on it are available for use. I was wrong about the Computer Voices. When I checked, they'd installed into the main root "voices" folder, not the Card's copy. Guess I didn't grab enough content to trip the 'Delete Some Files' routine...

To format your new 16GB card:

1. Load the SD card into TomTom
2. format the SD card using Windows
3. The card will only be formatted to 4 gig (for now)
4. Restart Home
5. The TomTom will ask which you wish to use (say the SD card)
6. Go ahead and let it update (it will placed the mp3, voices folder on the card along with a couple of other files)
7. Exit Home and remove the SD Card from the 920
8. Place the SD card into a SD card reader
9. Create a directory on your hard drive
10. Copy all the files and folders from the SD card to this folder
11. Reformat the SD sd card this time it should allow formatting to 15.XXGB
12. Copy all the files you earlier copied off the SD card back onto it
13. Reinsert the SD card into TomTom 920
14. Turn the 920 back on and start Home
15. Again select the SD card as the one you wish to use (note it should say about 15.XXGB available)

note: to add more files into the card, do not have the card in the TomTom but in the reader. You will get an error message if your card is in the TomTom and you're trying to add files when your card has already exceeded 4GB.

To format your new 16GB card:

1. Load the SD card into TomTom
2. format the SD card using Windows

Pedro, you lost me at step 2. As Noted above, I can't see or access the SD card when it's in the unit and Home's menu option, 'Device --> Change Device' is disabled. I'm guessing there's a Step: "1.5 Connect TomTom to PC" (but is it with or without Home??).

Could you kindly break down the individual tasks to complete Step 2. Thanks!

-Ricochet

In the reader BTW, Windows reports the card to be formatted & 16GB, but probably not the way a TomTom wants it, or something.w
