One 3rd Edition
I received my tt1 3rd edition last week and am trying to figure out a mounting solution. I have an 07 Mini Cooper S, so windshield real estate is lacking and I am not too keen on putting it there.

Since I can never leave anything alone, I was looking at the suction cup mount that came with the device, and noticed you can remove two screws to reveal the ball joint that allows the device to swivel. Having looked in stores a lot lately for the GPS that would suit me, I have seen several of the accessory mounts out there. I went on a mission to best buy to see if some of the other mounts may be adaptable to the ball joint of the tt1 mount.

I am not absolutely sure as of yet, but it seems like the garmin ball joint is the same size as the one inside the tt1 windshield mount. Not sure if this is just the 3rd edition or if the mounts have changed at all, but I am thinking of trying the Garmin dash mount for the 510 to see if it will clip into the back of the tt1 mount. I unfortunately did not get a chance to sit there with my screwdriver and put the pieces together in the store to confirm that it will fit, but it sure looks like it would with zero to minimal modification.

Has anyone else tried this at all?

I was in a Best Buy somewhere in MN a few weeks ago and they had a dashboard mouting solution that may work for you.

Essentially it's a heavy bean bag with a place to mount the suction cup in the middle of it. It also has a non slip surface on the backside. Bit pricey at $40

That is what I used for a comparison, but like I said I was unable to reassemble the TomTom bracket to see if the garmin ball fit into the joint. It looks like it will, and if it does there is a solution that I want to try. Unfortunately with the nature of the dash and the vents in the mini, the bean bag thing probably wouldn't work, and you are definitely right about it being pricey.

Here is a link to what I am thinking for a solution, and hoping the ball will fit into the socket of the tomtom bracket.

I haven't tried what you're asking about, but I have a suggestion that's working for me. It's actually a suggestion that I read about from someone on this site, I think. (If you search on 2-sided tape you should be able to find the post.) I have the One XL and I assume the mounting kit you got is the same as mine. I took the surface mount disk that came with mine and peeled/scraped off the sticky backing. I bought a roll of 3M Heavy Duty 2-sided tape (3M calls it mounting tape) from Home Depot for about $5 and used that to attach the surface mount disk to the top of my dash. Make sure it's the heavy duty 2-sided tape, not the regular strength. At the Home Depot I went to, they were side-by-side so be careful. Then I attached the windshield suction mount to the disk. I'm really pleased with how it's worked out. It's pretty rigid and doesn't vibrate or feel loose at all when I make any adjustments on the screen after it's mounted. It's been about two weeks and I've taken my One XL off and on many times and everything still feels very secure. The person I got the idea from said when/if you decide to remove the disk, the tape will come off without leaving any marks on your dash. I'm not at that point yet, so I can't vouch for that.

Although I didn't answer your question, I hope this is helpful anyways. And it only costs $5.

I bought a piece of plexi glass cut into a square just big enough for the suction cup and used the above mentioned double sided tape and secured it to my dash. I then just use the suction cup mount.

Side note: use rubbing alcohol to clean the armor all of your dash before you try sticking the tape down.

These are all great suggestions and very much appreciated. They will all go into consideration as I try to find the solution that I am waiting for.

The only problem with the solutions is the odd dynamics of the dashboard and the very small windshield in my particular car. These solutions would put the screen in my windshield view above the dash which is what I am trying to avoid. I have help the gps up there and it just cuts off too much of my view in my opinion, but may end up being something I have to live with. I think I am going to try the solution I proposed earlier, and if it does not work out I have a friend with a garmin I can sell it to.

Not sure if any of you have seen the dash in the new mini, but for the weekends driving I actually used the suction cup on the center speedometer. It works and looks a bit comical, but does get in the way a bit.

Anyway, thanks again for all of your suggestions and please keep them coming. I will let you all know how things turn out when i get a chance to order the garmin mount, maybe it will be helpful to other.

Thanks.

I did the same but used velcro on the dash and velcro on one side of the plexiglas. Works like a charm.
