Okay, I'm a newbie, so if this has been asked 100 times already, go easy on me.....

What's the benefit from the SD card slot - can I add custom maps or other data to my XL?

Yes, this has been answered many times before, but let me summarize the answer:
1) If you put tons and tons of POIs and custom routes on the internal memory, you could potentially run out of space. Using a larger SD card will give you more storage space
2) You can use multiple cards with different maps on them. Therefore, you could have an SD card with Europe maps on it, and another with the USA/Canada maps, and another with Australia maps....just swap them out when you want different maps.
3) You can only use EITHER the internal memory OR the SD card memory...they are not additive. (i.e. the internal 1G memory and an external 1G SD card does not equal 2G). As soon as you plug in the SD card, the internal memory is ignored.

thanks

Thanks Birdman, that helps clear things up!

So, if I were to get an additional card, I would need to make it 'bootable', right? Is it as simple as copying the TT application over to it ? If there's documentation on this, please point me there.

Also, is there a way to make custon routes, are they called itineraris? and load those onto the card?

'preciate the help............

Yes. Just use Windows Explorer to copy and paste the contents of the internal memory over to the card. It's recommended that you set Explorer to 'show all hidden files', just to be sure you don't miss anything.

so where do you purchase these SD cards? how much do they cost? what sizes do they come in?

Here are two ways to create routes in google maps that can be moved to your TT as Iteneraries. http://www.houghi.org/tomtom/ and http://www.janboersma.nl/gett/index.php. Dig around here in the forum for a bit more detail and tips on using either of these approaches.

They are the same SD cards that are used in digital cameras. So anywhere that sells cameras will have them.

Since the unit already has 1 gb of memory, it makes sense to buy a 2 gb card.

I was going to post the same question on a new thread but glad I searched, lol. Once I get whatever TT I am likely to buy, I have bought an SD Card of 2gigs already. So, will I need to use an external card reader (ie. printer)via usb hook up to copy the files from the TT to the new card directly? If I am using windows xp, I assume there is an option when copying files that says copy all hidden files?

Thanks for any help guys..and oh yeah, is there some type of software in the TT app that allows me to copy the files to a card reader? If not, I am blonde here for a sec wondering how I can transfer files, lol

The basic idea is that the TomTom One LE has the software and maps on built-in memory, only 1GB of size. It holds all the software and the US map, but there isn't much memory left for additional maps or POI files, voices, etc. . But it also has a SD card slot that will take a 2GB SD card. One works or the other. For the SD card to work, you have to first get software, maps, etc. on it.

You can plug the TomTom into one of your computer's USB sockets with the included USB wire. Windows XP and Windows Vista will recognize it as a "mass storage device" (like a flash drive or external hard drive). You can open My Computer and then you will see it as a new drive letter (like E:, F:, etc.).

Then you need to connect the 2GB SD Card to your computer. Many computers already have a memory-card reader that accepts a SD card. If you have that, insert your SD card there. Again, in My Computer you will be able to find that SD card as a "drive" (E:, F:, etc.).

If you don't have a built-in memory card reader, then the easy thing to do is purchase an external memory card reader which attaches to a USB socket and accepts SD cards.

Once you have both the TomTom and SD card both readable from your computer, you can use My Computer to copy/paste everything on the TomTom to the new SD card (as someone suggested, first find in My Computer where it allows you to view hidden files and be sure that option is turned on).

Once the copy completes, use the Safely Remove Hardware feature to disconnect both the TomTom and the SD card reader from the PC. You will find that in the system tray (bottom right area of your Windows desktop, just select each "drive letter" and choose to remove and wait till Windows says it is safe).

After disconnecting, turn off the TomTom. Insert the SD card into the TomTom One LE. Power on the TomTom. It "should" now start from the SD card. If you get an error screen (there is a screen that shows a SD card with a big "X" on it), then something went wrong. Turn off the TomTom in that case, and then remove the SD card. Your TomTom will still work from the built-in memory.

WARNING: This should work, but in two days I have already found that there are "gotchas". In about 2-3 hours I will be going to Office Depot to get a 2GB SD card, so I can do this myself. I learned through this forum only today that the SD card is not "additional memory", but "alternative memory", for the ONE LE. I will post my success (or not) to this thread.

Everything I wrote above about Windows procedures are standard procedures for working with mass storage devices in Windows. All of that works as I wrote. The warning part is that I can't guarantee that the TomTom will accept the new memory card after doing these Windows procedures.

hey, thanks for the reply! This should hopefully make it easier on me, that is, assuming that my TT will have the slot for the extra SD card, lol. I have a printer with a built in card reader so I can use that as my external card reader, and copy the files from my TT directory to it. I assume that there is no point putting my SD card into my TT before I even set anything up? Wouldn't that save the copying of files time, etc? Also, when I copy all the files from the internal memory of the TT, will there be a direct pop up asking me if I want to enable hidden files as well?

The procedure I wrote above for copying the ONE LE system to a SD card worked for me. After copying files to the SD card (took a while, almost 1 GB of data transferred), I diconnected the devices, powered off the TT, inserted the SD card into the TT and then powered on the TT. It started well and worked.

I then put it back on the PC. I went into My Computer and verified that the TT with SD card had about 1 GB of used space and about 1 GB of free space. I proceeded to find some new voice files over the internet, and loaded them. I made sure I went over 1 GB. I then disconnected and used the TT unconnected to change to a new voice. This convinced me that the TT was using the SD card, not the internal memory.

Regarding Bigredfan's last questions. Using the printer as a memory card reader will work. You cannot place an empty SD card in the TT ONE LE and expect to be able to address both the SD card and internal memory at the same time. It is one or the other, not both. Therefore, you need to follow the procedure I wrote, if you want to usee the ONE LE with a bigger SD card (instead of internal memory).

Copy of New Map Software from new unit to old unit?

I'm trying to use logic, but sometimes that doesn't work. I bought a new xl 330 for my wife and it has the new mapping software version. The xl one unit that she bought me last year has the old mapping software.... My logic says I can copy the mapping software from hers to the computer and then load it onto my older one xl (via memory card) Does that seem feasible?

Tom

Sorry, no.....

Maps are 'locked' to a specific device when installed. As such, you can't even share maps between two units of the same model, let alone two different models.

voices to name the streets.

You seem to be the go to guy.... Maybe you can help me.Is there a way to obtain a male computer voice? From what I've read only the computer voice will speak the street names I have One XL....

In Home, go to Add Maps/Voices. Depending upon the version of Home you have (the newest takes you to the next screen with a choice of recorded or computer voices), ou may have to arrow right 2 screens to see a specific icon for computer voices.

Now then, see what is offered under the 'default' choice. You should see both m & f computer voices offered. If not, select 'all' as the filter and see the offerings there.

Select a m voice to dl and install.

Be aware that because of space considerations, ou may need to move a computer voice (f) from your unit to the computer to free up space. If so, navigate through Home's icon choices to the one where it shows contents of your unit, voices and it'll let you move a voice to the computer.

Is your model a ONE XL or XL-S? If the XL (without the S) you don't have the text-to-speach feature and can't use computer voices because you don't have the Loquendo software required for speaking road names/numbers etc. The XL-S is about 50$ more than the XL because of this and 64MB of RAM vs 32MB of RAM of the XL.

A lesson to me to read information more carefully, Gilbert. Thanks for the obvious ... which I missed.

TomTom is VERY strange when it comes to pricing. Take a look at their current prices between the 330XL and 330XL-S :p

SD card / XLS

I`m new here, made a few attempts at getting advise on transfereng the contents of my TT to an Sd card. After reading for what seems like many hours, I attempted the process. Using windows explorer, I made sure the show hidden files was selected, and that Hide extensions for known files was not selected. But I still get the big red X when I insert the card in my XLS. There is also a HIDE PROTECTED OPERATING SYSTEM FILES that is selected, could this be my problem ?? I`m using a PNY Optima 2gb 60X. I also tried copying just going thru my computer and copy/ paste. nothing but the big red X when the Sd card is inserted in the TT. Any help ??
