I was going to post the same question on a new thread but glad I searched, lol. Once I get whatever TT I am likely to buy, I have bought an SD Card of 2gigs already. So, will I need to use an external card reader (ie. printer)via usb hook up to copy the files from the TT to the new card directly? If I am using windows xp, I assume there is an option when copying files that says copy all hidden files?
Thanks for any help guys..and oh yeah, is there some type of software in the TT app that allows me to copy the files to a card reader? If not, I am blonde here for a sec wondering how I can transfer files, lol
The basic idea is that the TomTom One LE has the software and maps on built-in memory, only 1GB of size. It holds all the software and the US map, but there isn't much memory left for additional maps or POI files, voices, etc. . But it also has a SD card slot that will take a 2GB SD card. One works or the other. For the SD card to work, you have to first get software, maps, etc. on it.
You can plug the TomTom into one of your computer's USB sockets with the included USB wire. Windows XP and Windows Vista will recognize it as a "mass storage device" (like a flash drive or external hard drive). You can open My Computer and then you will see it as a new drive letter (like E:, F:, etc.).
Then you need to connect the 2GB SD Card to your computer. Many computers already have a memory-card reader that accepts a SD card. If you have that, insert your SD card there. Again, in My Computer you will be able to find that SD card as a "drive" (E:, F:, etc.).
If you don't have a built-in memory card reader, then the easy thing to do is purchase an external memory card reader which attaches to a USB socket and accepts SD cards.
Once you have both the TomTom and SD card both readable from your computer, you can use My Computer to copy/paste everything on the TomTom to the new SD card (as someone suggested, first find in My Computer where it allows you to view hidden files and be sure that option is turned on).
Once the copy completes, use the Safely Remove Hardware feature to disconnect both the TomTom and the SD card reader from the PC. You will find that in the system tray (bottom right area of your Windows desktop, just select each "drive letter" and choose to remove and wait till Windows says it is safe).
After disconnecting, turn off the TomTom. Insert the SD card into the TomTom One LE. Power on the TomTom. It "should" now start from the SD card. If you get an error screen (there is a screen that shows a SD card with a big "X" on it), then something went wrong. Turn off the TomTom in that case, and then remove the SD card. Your TomTom will still work from the built-in memory.
WARNING: This should work, but in two days I have already found that there are "gotchas". In about 2-3 hours I will be going to Office Depot to get a 2GB SD card, so I can do this myself. I learned through this forum only today that the SD card is not "additional memory", but "alternative memory", for the ONE LE. I will post my success (or not) to this thread.
Everything I wrote above about Windows procedures are standard procedures for working with mass storage devices in Windows. All of that works as I wrote. The warning part is that I can't guarantee that the TomTom will accept the new memory card after doing these Windows procedures.
