TomTom Model(s)
1005 World
Hello everyone I'm new to the forum and have a question,

I've recently purchased a go 1005 world and installed tomtom home on my pc, I have connected it and all seams to be ok ,it has used the latest maps function and updated the tomtom. So far so good.
My concern is the reliability of tomtom home as I have read what seams like a lot of reports of peoples go 1005 working well until updates are added VIA tomtom home, my question, should I trust tomtom home and connect my go 1005 weekly as recommended ? What will I gain from any updates ?
Or should I forget about using tomtom home ?
And leave my unit as it is working great ?
Thankyou
Rich.

First of all, you do NOT use Home with that model but, rather, MyTomTom which you get at tomtom.com/getstarted.

Is that what you were referring to?

Sorry about that ,that's exactly what I should have written . I've installed Mytomtom.

Well, you do need MyTomTom for application and map updates. What is the application you have on your unit now? And map version?

Yep, you are up to date. If your desktop icon shows a yellow bar or a green/blue down arrow, then that's an indication you should connect your unit to the computer as there is a download waiting.

If the icon just shows as the white circle with red hands, there is no need to connect to the computer.

I didn't say that ...........

I'll be honest: people needing the MyTomTom web based interface have had more issues updating apps and maps than have users still using Home 2. Not all, but some.

i may well have a few more questions as i get used to my new tomtom 1005 hope thats ok,
Does the hd traffic show traffic (if any) in a certain radias around you (i think i read its about a 40 mile radius it picks up )? or the direction your travelling in ? or do you have to be following a planned route for it to show traffic ?

If you go to View map and select the option to show traffic, it'll show any issues in the surrounding area.

It IS an issue that the horizon for traffic has been cut back to 120 km from 160.

Thankyou very much, Sure glad i found this forum .
Very helpful keep up the good work . Its certainly appreciated.

I spent too much time sorting out a picture and measuring it on Google maps, so didn't see dhn had already replied (Grrr....), but here's my five-pennyworth....

There's LOTS of discussion about the reduced Traffic report radius that happened about a year ago. It used to have a range of about 100-150 miles, but after a heavy winter caused them massive data headaches they crippled it down to about 50 miles (maybe 75km).

They say they are constantly trying to improve it, and the radius has gone up and down a few times since, but it's been ongoing an awful long time.
See all the complaints on their own "Discussions" website LIVE Services - HD Traffic. Reduced range in UK&EU unacceptable.

(But see what I'm CURRENTLY seeing below)

TT say it was too much data crashing their servers, everyone else thinks it was too much data causing them to go over their contracted limits with the Telecom companies....

To answer your questions, yes it's a circle around your current location, and no, you don't need to have a route planned. If you just tap on the traffic bar on the right of the screen and select "View map" it will show you everything within the radius.

From my home in west London, that currently means I'm seeing traffic problems as far north as Birmingham and Leicester which is about 97 miles or 156km to the furthest one as the crow flies.

I was pleasantly surprised by that!

One thing we've seen cause grief to a few users is when a combination of both map and firmware upgrades are offered concurrently. It appears that the best thing to do in such instances is to take only the firmware upgrade first, get that installed, and then come back after any map update afterward. Whether that problem will occur down the road we can't know, but some users who recently requested a download/install of both at once had some real problems as a result.

I've used the latest map guarantee , having connected the 1005 last week for the first time since buying it ,
Where would future map updates come from that I'm entitled to and are free ?

You'd get them when connecting to MyTomTom and click on the web site's MyTomTom button-->Get New Items. Another window would open up showing what's available, including a map when it is available for you.

Only the LMG is free in most cases in the UK. I'm sure you don't yet have the "M" models that offer a lifetime map coupon in the box. But the LMG was a good instance of where it is good to take the application first, and I suspect your new 1005 was offered a new application... there have been a lot of recent updates.

Later, if you choose to buy a map or subscription, if for some reason the system offers you a firmware upgrade concurrently, just remember to take the firmware first. That seems to avoid some headaches.

Unless TomTom are doing something radically new , I'm 99% sure you are not entitled to any more free maps, I'm afraid. That option is only available in the US (on models with an "M" at the end of the model name).

What you SHOULD be able to get free are what's called "MapShare corrections", which are very minor changes reported by users, such as blocked roads, new speed limits etc. (but not new roads)

However, even though the new "NAV3" models (of which the Go1005 World is an recent example) have been available for around 18 months, they STILL haven't got MapShare working on them yet.

Thanks for the info.
How do you delete routes you've used but won't use again , theres an option in recent destinations but only to delete all ?
