TomTom Model(s)
Tomtom GO for Android
Tomtom just released the new fall maps, version 855. We created a new thread here for discussion on these new maps.

Before you update your maps: We recommend the following steps to prepare yourself, prior to a map upgrade:

1) Make an explorer/finder backup. With any change this big on a Tomtom, it's always a good thing to back up first. Backup instructions are here.
2) After your backup, upgrade to the latest app. Earlier apps had issues with map installs, so you should update your app to the latest version before attempting a map upgrade. To update your app, choose "Update my Device" in Tomtom HOME, and if an application is offered, check the application and uncheck everything else, and click update. Keep repeating these steps until HOME has no newer application to offer.

How to download your map:
- Maps must be downloaded via Tomtom HOME. You can install Tomtom HOME from this link. There has been a recent critical update to Tomtom HOME (version 2.7.6.2056). If you have issues installing the HOME update, check this thread.
- If you're device has been used for less than 30 days and you haven't downloaded a map before: You should get a free map under the "Latest map guarantee". To use this guarantee, open Tomtom HOME, and go to Tools -> Latest Map Guarantee
- If you have an active or lifetime map subscription: Open HOME, log in with your email/password if not auto-logged in, and go to "Update my device". The new map should be offered automatically for download.
- Otherwise: If you want a new map you have to purchase one. Open Tomtom HOME, go to "Add maps", and follow the purchase steps. You can buy a single map, or you can buy the "map update service", which bundles current and future maps for a discounted price. Note that purchases are processed through Netherlands servers, so you often pay more than the quoted price due to foreign credit card fees. Also, you may need to call the card company first and tell them you plan to make a purchase from a Netherlands website, so that the charge won't deny.

Issues to consider when updating maps:
- Reserve enough time for the map update. Maps are 1 to 2 gigs in size, and can take a long time to install. You'll need time to download 1-2 gigs from Tomtom's servers, and then you'll need an additional 20-60 minutes to copy the map from your computer to your Tomtom.
- If you try to download when everyone else is trying on August 31st, the download could take up to 4 hours due to server congestion. Also, it may abort due to the overload. If it aborts, go to "update my device" and the download should resume from where it left off
- If you're device has app 8.x, you'll lose favorites and settings after the map update. To restore the from your backup (as recommended above), follow these steps, and then follow these steps.
- Inevitably, something breaks for certain models in the map update process. If you have an issue, check out this thread, to see if others are reporting a similar issue, and if anyone has found a workaround/fix.

I just updated my map, 855.2934, and now tomtom home tells me "Your map has not been updated for more than 20 weeks Unfortunately Map Share map corrections are temporarily not available".

Any relief for the folks in Europe (vs. the 850 fiasco), or are they still firmly in "segmented" mode with the European release of 855 for devices without SD support?

Nope, AFAIK those who required segments (or zones) with 850 still require them.....

The dl times posted by UK forum members is simply unbelievable.......... some are seeing a time of 30 or 40 HOURS for just a zoned download.

We all knew the TT servers were crappy at times but this goes beyond the pale, I think.

(you know, I think I remember a post from somewhere a long time ago that TT's European serverswere really hosted by a company in Houston, Texas!! )

Probably, I was in my standard state of dillusion....

Map Guarantee

When I logged on it only showed the 850 map as I logged on last week when I got my new 550. They said the map guarantee automatically enabled when I logged on. Support had to add the 855 map to my account.
As for download speed the UK map for the 550 took about 5 min to get... I have a 710 with European maps and its showing 40 hours to complete.

It seems like 40hrs is only happening on Western Europe maps, not the regional (eg: UK) maps.

Unless something's changed, I think all the maps come from the same server.

Perhaps Tomtom's misloaded the.toc file for the map, and it's cataloged at a lot larger than it really is.

Has anyone actually waited for the Western Europe download to complete? Perhaps it finishes in a few hours and not the 40 that HOME thinks it will take.

Well, from Andy_P:

But I'm on Virgin "20Mbps" and three attempts to download W+CE have failed so far, after estimating download times of 8-16 hours
.

someone else:

Anything else I try, the speed is what I would expect but at the moment the map download is showing 35 hrs plus and it started just after 10 this monring

and a third member:

I have been downloading since I first posted and it is still going, never known it be so slow. The first 2GB was well under an hour but the last 200MB have taken the rest of the day.

But others report reasonable dl times with their efforts, so who knows?

I've been downloading since 0800 GMT and still it shows 40 hous plus. I think I will wait (say about a month) before DL

There's gotta be issues with certain ISP's over in the UK. Some are reporting downloads of less than 30 minutes....

I've been communicating with some European owners, and I think we have a download workaround.

There appears to be a problem at some of the European akamai servers.

Try the steps below (from a similar issue a while back in Australia), as some Europeans have found success with the patch.

Try this: In start -> run, type (with the quotes):
notepad "c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts."

Add a line that says:
63.84.95.49 download.tomtom.com

Save the file, then try the download again.

What this does is repoint to my ISP's akamai server in Boston. All the akamai servers around the world are supposed to be clones of each other.

After the European issue is resolved, remove the line above to return to your local Akamai server, as it is normally faster.

It took me about 50 minutes to download the North America 2GB 855 maps in the US. I was on the phone with TT support at around 4pm EDT, just before downloading the new maps. The rep advised me that their servers would be down from about 7pm - midnight EDT for scheduled maintenance. Who in their right mind releases map updates immediately preceding a scheduled shutdown, or proceeds with a scheduled shutdown immediately following a map release?

Luckily for me, after a failed download attempt (that I had walked away from for a while), my download completed at 7:01pm EDT.

Also, the map update seems to have fixed my issue with LIVE traffic.

It didn't offer me a free map for my lifetime. I wound up trying LMG and it worked. This was the 2nd time I've used LMG...when I first purchased the unit and to upgrade to 855.

Guess that's a good thing - surprising, but good! What unit did you purchase? A TM or M model that included the lifetime maps? If so, in Home, there is a place to enter your code to activate that service ("Use my activation code") that requires the number that was supplied in the box with your device.

I just updated my map, 855.2934, and now tomtom home is telling me "Your map has not been updated for more than 20 weeks Unfortunately Map Share map corrections are temporarily not available". I noticed that i am not the only one with this problem. Is there a fix for it? is everyone having the same problem?

Thanks,

the mapshare error happens quite often for a few days after map release. this delay is longer than normal.

Everyone is reporting this error. What that means is that you haven't downloaded mapshares for the map in over 20 weeks.

This is true because no one is able to download any map 855 mapshares. Sometimes, when a new map is launched, it takes a couple days for mapshare to start working on the new map. This hasn't happened for the last few map releases, but it appears it happening this time.

Usually you can just wait it out. Hopefully not too many days longer.

I had an issue on map 855 that I saw at least one other member reporting.

I was unable to navigate to any address after updating the map on my GO 740, the device would reboot when it looked up the city. Navigating to POIs worked fine.

I was able to resolve by navigating to the same address in "Operate my GO". The city lookup took forever, but eventually worked. Then (just to be safe) I added a favorite in the emulator before closing "Operate my GO". This "favorite add" step fixes app 8.x reboots, so I did it just in case.

The above steps fixed the problem.
