just bought a tom tom

Yes. Make a full backup using Explorer, not Home. Ensure hidden files/folders are showing.

Then update your firmware and then, in Home: Tools-->Latest Map guarantee. You have 30 days from first use to get it.

Then ANOTHER full backup using Explorer.

Maybe I'm missing something, but other than your preferences, favorites, etc.. why does everyone insist that the backup is super important?

I had a corrupted OS on my TomTom a while back, and rather than restore a backup (which I certainly could have done) I let TT Home download and re-install the firmware and the map that was on my account.

You can, from what I understand, re-download the map that you paid for as often as you like.

In fact, you can go to TT in your explorer, delete every file on it.. then hook to TT home and it will fix it. At least that has been my experience.

Am I missing something?

You have 1 year from original purchase to download a map. No more.

There is no question but you probably can recreate the firmware and the map (within the year) and take time to recreate the favourites and other settings and the itineraries you created and, oh, don't forget the bunch of custom poi files you found and installed from the net .... and the splashscreens , and .... and ......

Or, you can take 3 minutes and back everything up.

But, hey, it's your time. :p

Well, my map seemed to suffer from some corruption one time when I was traveling in Little Rock, AK.

I contacted TomTom support and they told me that since I didn't have my backup with me, if I had an internet connection I could just let TT Home re-download everything.

Once a map is on your account, I was under the impression you could re-download it any time you needed to. The one year thing is new to me.
