This area is not my specialty but if you formatted the hd and had no backup I imagine you have a problem. One of the technical gurus will be in shortly and can give you a definitive answer.
Have you ever updated the device with a new map using Home from your current PC? if so it should be possible to recover the device, if you haven't ever updated the map then the only course of action is to purchase a replacement map - Mike
