Help needed for a One v3

I've purchased a Tomtom One V3, great unit! Here is the problem. I've created a list of POI's and installed them on the Tomtom. When I do a search on one location in Columbus, Ohio the restaurant is found, it's in the right location and the map is right, but the town name is wrong. Instead of showing Columbus as the town, Tomtom shows the town as Africa, Ohio. I've tried recreating the POI list and re-installing it on the Tomtom, no change.

Here is the other problem. Same POI list, when I do a search for the restaurant in Syracuse, NY I get the "no poi found" message. Once again I reconstructed that part of the POI list and re-installed it on the Tomtom, no change. In case anyone is wondering, yes I did delete the old file out of the Tomtom first before putting in the new POI list.

Third question. How do I get an icon to work for the POI lists I create? According to everything I've read I created an icon with a size of 20 x 20 pixels, saved it as a bitmap, named it the same as the POI file and installed it in the "map" folder in the Tomtom, along with the POI list.

I hope someone can help shed some light on these problems, while they are actually pretty small, there is no reason that I can see that I'm having these situations.

Thanks, in advance

Welcome.
How are you making the POIs?
The icon size is 24 x 24 or smaller.
Is the icon a bmp file? You can send me the icon file if you would like and I could fix it. PM for contact details.

I'm using Geocoder to get the coordinates and PoiEdit to create the ov2 file. I'll send the icon to you but no matter what the size when I want to use this POI the icon doesn't show up...maybe it is a size problem though. I've sent two to you...the smaller one is one that I created...the larger one is an icon I got from someone else...it's larger...neither of them work.

Here ya go...thanks again for the help. Btw...I worked on the ov2 file last night, I found a little coordinate problem, and the city was changed from Syracuse to Geddes...a suburb. Still can't find the restaurant in Tomtom. Also...once a POI is installed in the Tt shouldn't it show up when I click on the POI icon?

According to TomTom's Add to TomTom Web Developers Guide, the icon size should be 22 x 22, and you have the option of using a 44 x 44 icon in addition to that (you'll still need the 22 x 22 icon) I have created several POI sets and haven't had any problems with the icons (at least not once I started following the guide). Note that, since TomTom runs on Linux, the names of your ov2 and bmp files must match both spelling and case. In the case of the 44 x 44 icon, I have found that an upper case "X" is required (the guide actually uses upper case in one place, and lower case in another).

For the ov2 file, I installed it on my 920, and did the following:
  1. Navigate to...
  2. Point of interest
  3. POI in city
  4. Syracuse NY
  5. Quaker st
and I got the following:

GeddesNY.JPG

When I selected the POI, I got:

SolvayNY.JPG

A couple of notes:
  1. The town listed when TomTom displays the selected POI on the map is based solely on the coordinates in the POI file, and has nothing to do with the description of the POI
  2. If you precede the phone number of a POI with a ">" (greater than) symbol, it won't show up in the description, but WILL show up when you select the POI, and allow you to call the POI if you have paired your phone with your TomTom

What steps are you taking to find the POI, and then not finding it?

Help needed for One v3

Thanks for the help...I haven't used the developers info yet...I read through it and found it confusing....I'll read it again.

When I put the POI's in my TT I thought that they would show up when I clicked the POI icon...they don't...here is what I have to do to find them. First I have to click on Search...then get to the right state...then find the right city...then type in the POI I want to find...then click on Find. This doesn't seem like the right way to do this but it's the only way that I've found that I can find POI's that I've put in (except those that I downloaded from the TT Home site). If I'm doing something wrong I'd really like to get it fixed...hope you can help.

I'm relatively new to TomTom devices, but it sounds like your software interface is different than mine. On my 920, adding the ov2 file to the map folder results in a POI category with same name as the ov2 file. Once I identified the city in which I wanted to search, I selected the "Quaker st" POI category and got a list of (1) POIs.

With the apparently different interface, I'm not sure how much help I can be. If I'm misunderstanding something, maybe you or someone else can clarify for me.

P.S. Don't worry about the developers guide. I only pointed to it as a source for my information. I should point out though that the guide says that icon images should be 22 x 22 pixels in size (it doesn't say they should not exceed that size, but that they should be that size).

I don't think the interface is all that different...with the TTOne they also say to put the ov2 and bmp logo file in the maps directory....but I'm not seeing any list of Poi's...or any reference to what I put into the TTOne unless I search for it.

Can you list POIs by category? If so, do you have a "Quaker st" category after placing the ov2 file in the appropriate map folder? Once you have selected a city to search in, what means to you have to narrow down the list besides using "find" (by POI name)?

I did find this forum (click here) where they discuss the fact that some features appear to have been deliberately disabled on the ONE series. Apparently this can be overcome with a custom menu, but that's something I'm completely unfamiliar with.

I'm sure you can find similar discussions and solutions on the forums here too.

For now I'll bow out before I end up telling you something that screws up your device. Good luck.

Ok, I changed the image settings on it.
I rename both the image file and your .ov2 file to match. This is the key to make it work.

Let me know how it works out.

BTW, you will see the POI icon on the main map. But u can't click on the icon from the main. You need to go to browse map to do that.

Thanks for the help Pedro...but still no luck....no difference from before...still no logo anywhere...and no location in Syracuse/Geddes/Solvay, NY. I'm beginning to wonder if something is wrong with my TTv3. Shouldn't I be able to see a listing of all Quaker Steak and Lube restaurants? How would I do that?

Sorry I don't have a ONE 3rd edition. I know it lacks the Manage POIs option. This can be enabled with a custom menu builder: http://www.gregoryduncan.com/ttmd/index.php

Are you placing the 2 files in your map folder?
Follow the steps here: http://tomtomforums.com/showthread.php?t=2639

How are you checking the listing on your TomTom?
I do: 'Navigate to'
POI
near you
select the down arrow and find the custom POI category. In this case it will be Quaker Steak and Lube.

Hi again:
I've put both files in the Map folder, per the instructions I've read. When I do 'Navigate to' then POI...then near you...I get the list of POI's...but no Quaker Steak...they are in alphabetical order and it's not there. As for the menu builder...I thought I read somewhere that that software removed some other menus that TT had installed? I'll check it out...but I'm still wondering if something else is wrong.
