I just bought a 540 and finally figured that I needed a computer voice to use TTS. loaded Simon and when I tried to check "read voice aloud it was check but grayed out. Have not tested it yet on the road.

Any help with this?

TTS does not work while using the emulator on your computer. I use Susan or Richard and TTS works well with them.

Just took a short ride

NO where in the XXL manual does it say if you want TTS to switch to a computer voice. I switched to Simon before trip and got TTS but in the middle I switched back to Richard and got the old "turn right"

Are there other TTS voices (male, like richard) that I can download?

Ducky, Does Dave download give the street names or only the basic "Turn left in 500 feet" directions ? I thought there were only two computer TTS voices, Susan & English Simon ? How would you download Dave ? Save the download to the TT drive found when hooked up to the PC?

As I understand it, Dave will only work on 730's and up, not not 720's. I think that's what my colleague mvl posted recently.

Ducky, Does Dave work with YOUR XXL 540 which you own ? Moderator dhn does not believe it does based on a posting elsewhere, but YOU could let us know for sure.
Thanks dhn for your quick reply. I did not see Dave offered on TT Home with computer voice.

Yes, Dave is working fine on my XXL 540TM. Apparently dhn didn't catch my last two posts in the other thread. You can check it out at:

https://www.tomtomforums.com/general-tomtom-discussion/22708-xxl540tm-app-4.html

If you go there you can follow the steps I used to get it working. Dave is a computer voice so he names the streets, highways, cities, etc., and also announces rest areas or whatever warnings I have selected on my unit. Being a computer voice, his pronunciations are at time a bit humorous, but he speaks much more clearly (to my ears, at least) than Susan.

Hope this helps. Let us know if/when you get Dave installed and working.

P.S. You can install download Dave using the link I gave you in my previous post. Then if you use the link to the other thread I gave you in THIS post you can get the instructions I was given for extracting and installing the files.

I was referring to whether Dave ran on 720's or 730's only.

I KNOW that computer voice works on a 540 model ... I have one and he is installed! :D

Hi, dhn... I thought that was the case but didn't check back. I guess Rusty misunderstood and thought you were saying that Dave won't work on the xxl 540.

I have a severe hearing loss and while many with impaired hearing do better with female voices, I found I couldn't understand a word Susan says. Dave does the job for me...I like that deep, deep voice! :)

Of some interest, I am only being offered US Susan and UK Simon for my 740. Thought that very odd in that there were always one of each gender in each country style for the 720.

There's no significant difference between the 720 and 730. Upgrade the 720 firmware and you can't tell the difference. The 720 is offered Dave, Kate, Simon and Susan. It's the later models that don't get this full set of four.

You are correct. Was just offered Dave for my 720......

Does the 720 come with pois for Rest Homes? Think I'm about due..........

That is weird. My US TT XL335TM came with Dave and Susan. Dave speaks very clear and good instructions after tweaking the LEX files.

Thanks from "an old gaffer"

Thanks all to the extensive discussion of TTS on the XXL.

I, too, am hearing impaired and "Dave" is a welcome addition. I followed the extraction procedure and it worked fine after I deleted some non-English voices using HOME.

This voice will be a welcome addition.

I would be interested in the tweaking process you used and in the kinds of improvement that resulted. The only problem I have with Dave is his pronunciation of some city and street names. For example, he says "Mootner" instead of Mountainair. I would appreciate any info that would enable me to improve Dave's pronunciation.

A little confused

I am new to TomTom, use to have a Garmin. I have a 540XXL TM. What is with all the talk about voices? Do some Voices anounce street names anothers don't. Is one voice better than the other.

We are leaving on a trip this Friday, your input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Hugh

That model has the capability of text to speech when a computer voice is selected.

Preferences-->Voice Preferences-->Select voice and one will be listed with the name computer after it. (Susan).

Select that.
