Are we being left in the trash?

Your really suprised and ticked off about this?? I was amazed they brought mapshare to the 910. How many companies continually bring new features to their products?

Windows service packs are to fix problems, not add new features. Microsoft didn't put media center into the service packs so why should TomTom be required to add all the new features into a "service pack" for the 910. Now they could release it as an upgrade
and charge for it as a compromise.

I would love to have all of the features come to the 910, but don't expect it.

I can't seem to get mapshare on my 910. What's the trick?
Thanks,
Glenn

I made a raw disk image of a 720, then restored the image over my 910's disk, then I had to get updated maps and everything worked. I have VR and when comparing to my friend's 720 I can't find a difference in speed.

Which makes me think that there's probably no work at all that tomtom would need to do to give these features to 910 users other than just letting us install it from tomtom home.

I should have asked before i fooled around with my 910 - what application version was in the 720 image ?

I do not have access to a 720 device currently to create an image. However, I have tried both a clean install of both 7.221 and 8.01 with 710 and 720 N. American Maps. I did the ASR .dat file thing (with all the forum instructions), and have not been able to get the two VR icons to appear in the navigation/address menu.

The 910 does not like 8.10 very much, and has some minor issues with 7.221. I gave this another whack because you indicated your 910 was working above. Since mine is not, I will probably reload my Windows Explorer copy of my disk - I cannot see putting up with minor issues with 7.221 if I am not able to get voice recognition up.

I have no idea what might be embedded in your image that is not in a clean install with an Oldboy app. and N. American maps that have all the voice recognition state files.

It has 8.10. I think there's probably system files that you're missing, I need to do a better comparison of what the difference is. It might even be in the beginning sectors of the disk as I did a raw copy so right now my 910 reports its hard drive as 2gb. I was going to try to use a disk resizing tool to see if I can get my full 20gb back as 2gb isn't sufficient and ?he 910 doesn't have the SD card slot. I've just been rather busy and I don't get much time to mess with it.

Possibly us an imaging program like Accronis to re-image and restore your device - it lets you expand the size to fit larger drives.

maybe your working in a linex environment is letting you get yours working OK (except for the size, which parted should fix). I have not fooled around with linex since hacking a DTivo (not to get free service, but to connect to network and download programs - still works great), and am not going to for this - I guess I will live with VR on the 910.

I had extracted the 720 files from an image, deleted the map (as it of course would not function) and reloaded my 720 NA map. Triple-checked the ASR .dat file and everything else, clear-flashed and reset the unit - still no VR icons.

It worked otherwise OK (for a while) with 8.01, but then it started having some issues - especially with my bluetooth data connection. So as I write this, I have re-formatted it and am (again) copying back my 910 files with 7.162 app (works OK, so no need to go to 7.161). I am afraid if I continue to fool around with it (resets, clear-flashes, etc.) that I may brick it.

Oh well, 1 out of 2 is not bad. I successfully downloaded and installed new Blackberry desktop and device 4.5 app's for my 8120 (official one - not beta - from Orange UK site). I have had no trouble mating it with 910 several times - just have to use manual settings per this forum.

As a TomTom GO700 owner, I am ticked that more features aren't made available to older GO models. Even my GO700 is capable of most of these features. It has a big enough hard drive, Bluetooth, microphone, etc.

The proper analogy to Microsoft is that Microsoft provides feature updates through IE, Windows Media Player, and even true Service Packs (like SP2). No, we shouldn't expect TomTom to upgrade the hardware (bigger hard drives, larger screens, etc.), but anything that can be done via software should be provided to the older GO owners whenever hardware limitations do not prevent it. For example, why can't I edit the arrow icon to a different icon (car, etc.)? That's just silly to make that a feature only of the newer GO's.

I can understand that TomTom can't provide all the functionality of the GO720 to an original One user -- the hardware is just too different. But there's really not a tremendous amount of difference between the older GO models and the newer ones. Hard drive and screen size, which may limit some features -- yes. But most of the new features can be easily implemented in the GO700. If my GO700 is still working just fine hardware wise, why should it be a requirement for me to upgrade the hardware just to get the newer software features (which again, will work on my GO700 hardware)?

I was hoping someone might come up with a hack of the newer Application versions that would work on the older units. This would not be a like a hack to get free maps or anything like that - only making it possible for owners of older models to get the use of some of the features that their units are capable of.

I have experimented with both 7.221 and 8.01. They had minor glitches, and I was not able to get the VR icons, but PolyPill has. I would think it would not be a major job to tweak these apps to make them compatible with older units. This is beyond my expertise, but I would guess there are users that might be able to do this.

As far as I can tell it isn't even really the software that needs to be changed, just probably a little flag in Home that says what models you can install this stuff on. I've been playing with it again this weekend and I even got it to work by just deleting all the files on the tomtom and copying all the files from the 720 to it. It fires up and gives me the VR and lane change.

And thanks Internetpilot for backing me up on this stuff, I'm not sure if I'll ever purchase another tomtom product or recommend them any more. Just seams like a douche bag thing to do to your existing customers.

I am jealous - I have tried exactly that a number of times. I have wiped the device clean, run clear flash to get everything out of memory, and clean installed the 720 files. Not only do I not ever get the VR icons, but the 910 gets a bit buggy after using it awhile, and I end up reinstalling the 910 application.

I don't think Home is affecting it, as I first run it stand-alone after copying over the 720 files and look for the VR stuff. I also make sure the ASR file is there and is a "1" with no spaces or carriage return, and then do a reset to see if that will activate it - to no avail.

I may at some point get another TomTom, but I will probably not do do until if and when they upgrade their notoriously dull screen. With all the bright screens on other brands, I cannot fathom why they have not taken the opportunity to improve theirs in conjunction with the new models.
