920 question on speed limit.

I bought my 920 right before my latest trip to Italy. In Italy, it happily showed me speed limits (and the alarm) for most roads, especially the AutoStrada (130 kph). But, when I got home to Colorado, and drove to New Mexico, there are no speed limits at all! Even on Interstate 25!

Also, in Italy, the trip time estimates were quite accurate (I guess based on the known speed limits). But again, back on my Denver to Carlsbad trip, it overestimates the time of the trip by many hours. It seems as though it assumes my speed will be 40 to 50 mph, when the I-25 speed limit is usually 75, and US285 is 70 mph!

I searched and searched for a way to change my assumed speed of travel, to no avail. There is a menu pick for car preference, but it is greyed out.

Any help for this newbie, please?

Edit - I just loaded 8.01 firmware, but both my NA and Europe maps are 710.xxx. So why does the Europe map have speed limits and the USA map does not? (I'll have to see how to get the new maps, but I only have 165 Mb of free space. And I thought the SD card on this unit was not working? At least not for map storage?)

If you bought your unit within the last 30 days AND 7.10 is the map that came with your unit, THEN you are entitled to the latest map (which is 7.20) via Home's Latest Map Guarantee.

So of course I just find out about this 45 days after I bought the 920!

And now they want $80 for the 720 NA map!

You may want to call TomTom customer support.

If you can show your proof of purchase and 720 came out within (or before) 30 days from then, they may be able to still give you the map.

Good luck!

I talked to TomTom customer support about this.

There had been plans to have some options for when the unit is hard wired into a car that have so far not been implemented.

While I think it would have been better just to not have the option at all, supposedly it is grayed out on everyone's units for now.
