That 30' range is not surprising. I've found that Belkin & TripMaster (iTripMaster ?) have good FM transmitters, ...TomTom, less so.
I have no end of trouble getting the TT to broadcast clearly around town, to the point where I have to either 'cup my hand' around the unit or 'lay hands on' the cig plug cord, to make the static go away. This could probably be solved by an isolator circuit...but then elsewhere, radio stations bleed-in loudly in regular locations, completely drowning out the TT. This never occurs in those spots with the iPod's transmitter (this issue is more likely signal-strength related).
