720 chaning screens

Likely some grunge has wedged itself in between the front bezel and the touch screen. Take a thin card (even a business card might work) and work it around in between the glass and bezel all the way around to see if you can dislodge whatever it is that's causing the "phantom presses". I've only had to do it once in the years I've owned my 720, and found that a thin feeler gauge from my automotive stock did the job perfectly.

Thanks for your reply, I tried your fix with no change with the problem, I've even removed the screen protector with no change.

To be clear - you have a 3rd party screen protector over the touch screen? No problem, just want to be sure we're talking about the same part.

Were you able to get anything at all out of the crack between the bezel and touch screen? Any chance you've got a magnifying glass handy?

Yes it is a 3rd party protector, I didn't find any dirt or crud under the bezel and the screen. I don't use my 720 much so it's in a case most of the time.

canderson thanks for your help, after I removed the screen protector I cleaned the screen with a eye glass cleaner and so far no more auto changing screens! I'll use my 720 Monday I'll let you know if the problem returned.

Thanks again.

Glad to hear you got it resolved. It's often tough to spot whatever it is that's creating the pressure.

I knew it was too good to be true, after I updated my 720 the screen changing came back! It's so bad now that I can't do anything but watch as it goes through screen after screen. Anyone have any ideas?

Just for grins, and I know this won't necessarily be easy -

Can you identify which screens keep coming up? If there's a pattern to it, we can at least isolate the area of the screen that is causing the problem and get focused on that.

It seems to be all of the screen, it starts in the center and then depending on what screen it's on it will go up and down, right and left. On the screen "Show POI category on map:" it will randomly go up and down, when it stops moving and I touch the screen it starts jumping again. The one thing that I've notice is when it goes to a screen that has options on the bottom of the screen ie; find or done, it will stay on that page until I touch one of them. If it goes to a screen with the key board, it seems to stay on the E,M and L keys.
On the TomTom web site's help section they refer to a "looping" which they say is the TomTom application may not be installed properly. Not sure if my problem is what they are calling looping, any thoughts on this?

Phantom movement often caused for one of two reasons:
1. There is a bit of dirt under the bezel somewhere. Take the sharp edge of a business card and SLOWLY move around the entire circumferance of the glass under the bezel.

2. A screen protector, over time essentially 'shrinks' slightly, causing additional pressure on the screen, which can result in phantom movements.

I'm not an expert but this problem seems to be software based. I deleted everything on it (not the map) and reinstall it back and it's working again. I will use it Tuesday to see if all is well.

Thanks to all.

My GO720 has been doing the same error. It goes from the navigation screen to the "help me" screen where the police, ambulance, etc are listed. Then it stays there if I come back out of the screen it will go right back to the deepest screen and stay. I checked for crud under the bezel and saw nothing. It happened a few months ago and TomTom had me do a hard reboot or some thing like that and it went away. A few months later it is back again. This is a refurbished unit and started going wacko not long after I bought it. Bet the screen flipping was the issue when it got turned in the first time.

Do you have a screen protector on it? Sometimes, over time, they tend to 'dry out', causing extra pressure on the glass .... resulting in 'phantom' presses such as you describe.

Yes but I took it off. I read the past posts, checked under the bezel etc. Like I said this is a repeat from a few months ago. TomTom said rest and they gave me some instructions which I don't have now. It is the same screen also.

A pin reset in the bottom of the unit is what they probably suggested.

You may also want to:
1. Make an Explorer, not Home backup.
2. Format the unit's drive. Don't use quickformat.
3. Restore the backup, again using Explorer.

2nd GO730 flipping screens

this screen flipping thing is happening to me.
its not something trapped under the edge of the screen.
i've used the reset button to reset my system.
I do not have nor have i ever used a screen protector.
TT sent me a refurb'd unit after this started happening with my 1st (new) Go730unit.
2 days after i got the refurb'd unit, it began happening again.
I've reformatted this one, and it still happens.
This is a software issue and TT needs to come up with a fix.

for both units it always ended up at the HELP ME/PHONE FOR HELP/NEAREST POLICE STATION screen.

If it were a software issue as such, the same thing would be happening to the tens of thousands of 720, 730, 920 and 930 users worldwide. And it is not.

When you initially power on the unit, does it go immediately to the Help Me icon?

When you go to start up preferences, UNCHECK 'start where I left off' and DO check to start at the Navigate to screen.

Then, shut off the unit. Restart it. What happens?

Thanks for the reply....
I changed "continue where i left off" to "ask for destination" in the start up Pref menu.
when it restarts, the menu screen comes up and i touch DONE.
i shows the map and my current position, then, after a few seconds, it scrolls thru to the same POLICE STATION screen...
