TomTom Model(s)
XXL550TM, VIA 1535TM, XL340.S
It turns out that I can't use many of the files from an old damaged XXL550TM on another one that works. The files from the damaged XXL550TM are in a folder on my hard drive named TomTom and is 10.5GB.

I can't access those files with a working XXL550TM connected to my computer using TomTom Home. The application only see's the files from the working gps even when logging in with the user name and password that was used with the damaged gps.

The working XXL550TM has it's files in another folder named TomTomupgrade which are accessible using TomTom Home and has it's own TomTom Home user name and password.

Both folders appear to be standalone
C:\Users\ABC\Documents\TomTom
C:\Users\ABC\Documents\TomTomUpgrade

I'd like to free up some space on my hard drive. Can the folder containing the files associated with the old damaged gps be deleted without affecting the TomTom Home application?

Thx.

Yes, you can delete your old GPS folder on your computer this will not delete Tomtom Home installation on your computer.

Do NOT delete the folder C:\users\{yourname}\Documents\TomTomUpgrade\HOME\Download\Download\complete\map unless you are absolutely sure you have a full manual backup of your device on your PC. That's where your most recently downloaded maps reside. All else can be recovered in one fashion or another, but TomTom doesn't hold maps 'on account' for you for these older devices the way they do for the newer ones.

That said - if that folder holds both older and newer map versions, you can safely delete the older one(s).

If the GPS no longer works I don't see why keep the GPS file on the computer?

He does have one 550 device that works, there may be map files in the same folder for both devices.

The older version of TomTom Home v2.11 reused the same folder named TomTom to store files in from the time the application was first installed on my computer many years ago. I hadn't updated the XXL550TM in about 3 or 4 years. The other one I have was never connected to this computer.

In Windows TomTom Home is controlled under services in computer management so you can start it manually. Otherwise it will start and run in the background every time you boot the computer. Normally if a new version of TomTom Home is available you are notified by the application when you open the program and you're prompted to download and install the new version. It's been years since the gps was updated.

When I went to update the XXL550TM it wouldn't connect. I was getting error messages. Tech support was useless. And I didn't get a prompt to update TomTom Home. The problem was solved when the gps hit the floor and the screen wouldn't turn on.

I was able to connect the other XXL550TM I had but was reluctant to make any changes because I saw the same files from the damaged gps were still available on the TomTom Home dashboard even though I logged in with a different account and didn't want to create any confusion between devices and their respective files.

I thought It would probably be a good idea to update the application. As I hadn't been prompted by the TomTom Home application that a new version was available. I downloaded a new installer directly from the TomTom web site and saved a copy of it in a folder on my hard drive along with a couple of older installer versions.

When I opened the new version of TomTom Home all the files from the damaged gps were gone. At the time I thought I might still be able to use them if i were ever able to get the damaged gps to work again. I took a chance and uninstalled the new version of TomTom Home and reinstalled the old version using an older installer and saw the files were still there.

When I reinstalled the new version of TomTom Home v2.23 I checked the path in preferences and realized the new version of the application created a totally different folder to store files in named TomTomUpgrade.

So all the old files from the damaged gps are in it's own folder. At this point the working XXL550TM has been updated. And enough changes have been made (windows 7 64bit registry?) that it's no longer possible to reinstall the old version of TomTom Home. Even if an old installer version is used the computer installs the new version of TomTom Home and the file path in preferences points to the new TomTomUpgrade folder.

I guess if I needed to I could try to change the file path in the TomTom Home v2.23 dashboard to see if I can access the old files but I'm not sure what effect it would have. My guess is that the most it would do would be to store any new files saved from the working gps in the old folders resulting in confusion.

I backed up the TomTom folder containing the files from the damaged XXL550TM to a folder on thumbdrive along with a readme.txt file containg the serial # of the gps and path where the folder came from. I renamed the TomTom folder on my hard drive to TomTomXYZ just to see if anything breaks. I'll leave it like that for a while before deleating it.

Yes, that's what I'm saying Tomtom Home creates a folder for each GPS in your possession.

Logically that's what it should do.

TomTom Home v2.11 didn't create a new folder when I connected another gps. It didn't even create a new folder when I logged in using a different user name and password. TomTom Home created a new folder when I installed an updated version of the application. TomTom Home v2.23 created the new folder named TomTomUpgrade. It created the new folder when the new version of the application was installed not when I connected a different gps.

I connected, backed up and updated an XXL550TM using TomTom Home v2.23.

I have an XL340.S that hasn't been connected or updated in a very long time. I'm reluctant to connect it. It's my impression that TomTom disabled the safety camera feature on the XXL550TM when the gps connected to the server and saw that the subscription expired. The feature was working previously and only realized it afterward. The option to install services from the TomTom Home dashboard is also unavailable (greyed out). The devices are also no longer supported.

The safety camera features were also disabled after I connected the two VIA1535TM devices I have using MyDrive Connect. A notification indicated the subscriptions expired. I didn't know TomTom was going to disable the feature. The feature was working previously on both of them. I only realized it was disabled afterward when I saw the option was greyed out on the devices.
