XXL 540 TM Screen issues

The touchscreen on my XXl 540 Tm is becoming increasingly unresponsive. I have to try multiple touches to get it to respond to the icons, i.e. "Navigate to..." "Home" "Favorite" etc, etc. I have updated to the latest software and maps. The unit will operate just fine from my laptop, so it's strictly a screen hardware issue. Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.

Could be that a touchscreen replacement would resolve the problem, but it's easier to just replace the entire touchscreen/LCD assembly if that's what is causing the problem. Various sources (typically Chinese) have been posted in various threads for replacement parts.

The following is pretty typical, but I have no idea how they are to work with. Just picked one of many that popped up this evening:

When did you purchase your GPS? If it is still under warranty, you may want to contact TomTom.

With best wishes,

Have you tried a drum reset on the unit by holding the power button about 10 seconds till you hear the drum sounds?

@dhn
You count too slow!

Thanks for the input!

Tried the reset, aka drumroll, with no success. Found out the warranty is good for two years and am in the process of contacting TT for return/exchange. I'll probably lose this model which I was able to customize. I heard later models don't allow customization. I have to say I'm not too impressed with TT as this unit is only a year and a half old. My old Garmin Nuvi still works fine and the only reason I bought the TT was for lifetime maps and traffic. Thanks all!

Two years? Heck of a deal. Did you get it extended somehow (credit card, store upsell or freebie, or ?). I hadn't heard that they were offering 2 year warranties.

There's still some chance that you'll get a refurb XXL540 in return.

I was pleasantly surprised to find on TT's website the two year warranty:

"WHAT THIS WARRANTY COVERS
1) TomTom Inc. (“TomTom”) warrants to the original purchaser (“you”) of the hardware with which this Limited Warranty is included (“Hardware”) that the Hardware will be free from defects in workmanship and materials under normal use (“Defects”) for a period of two (2) years from the date that the Hardware was first purchased by you (“Warranty Period”). During the Warranty Period the Hardware will be repaired or replaced at TomTom’s choice (“Limited Warranty”) without charge to you for either parts or labour. This Limited Warranty covers the replacement of the Hardware only. If the Hardware is repaired after the Warranty Period has expired, the Warranty Period for the repair will expire six (6) months after the date of repair."

That's good to see.... but does it cover ALL models?

My understanding was that TT guarantees USED to be two years but that they reduced it down to one year some time ago.

For example if I look in the "Licences" folder on my Go 940 it has whole bunch of .doc files with names starting with "LW" (limited warranty) for different countries

The US/Canada file (LW-1y-English 2007_US CAN.DOC) says:
WHAT THIS WARRANTY COVERS
1) TomTom Inc. (“TomTom”) warrants to the original purchaser (“you”) of the hardware with which this Limited Warranty is included (“Hardware”) that the Hardware will be free from defects in workmanship and materials under normal use (“Defects”) for a period of one (1) year from the date that the Hardware was first purchased by you (“Warranty Period”). etc. etc.

The "non US" version (LW-1y-English 2007_NO US CAN.DOC) also says much the same:
WHAT THIS WARRANTY COVERS
1) TomTom International B.V. (“TomTom”) warrants to you that the Hardware will be free from defects in workmanship and materials under normal use (“Defects”) for a period of one (1) year from the date that the Hardware was first purchased by you (“Warranty Period”). etc. etc.

My XL LIVE IQ Routes edition has exactly the same files on it.

All my NA units since the first (720) have shown a 1-year warranty in the 'Licence' link on the unit.

Uh, sorry mvl. 'License' :D
