Ive been selling tons of XL-S this week at work (i work at Future Shop) and a major problem came in...

the XL-S is really silly, its said it come with TTS, but the unit dont come with the TTS computer voice pre-loaded with french (which is what language everybodys talking here) but the funny thing is that if i want to add it to the unit there not enough internal memory to fit it in !

Even if i delete all the other voice, all the added POI i still dont have enough space to fit ONE computer voice !

Really? Does the XL*S come with a CD that contains the TTS voices?

I know that with the 920 the French voices Bernard and Juliette which are 28MB and 35MB respectively. The XL*S doesn't have that much space available?

No that worst, it doesnt come with a CD, you have to download it with HOME

i will check to confirm you, but there only 17mb left on the internal memory when its fresh from the factory

i spend almost all my afternoon loading the voice for all the customer that were trying to return it cause of the lack of that voice

anyway i will also check again to be sure but the english TTS is not pre-installed also.... what a joke...

Hi DCourteau

I purchased the XL-S on the website of Future Shop, it's for a gift for my wife parents (french speaking)

I have to delete the TTS voice of Susan by connecting the GPS to the computer, then going "my computer\ (removable drive of the TomTom)" in the folder of the text to speech of Susan and delete her voice.

After, I have plenty of space to download via Home application the french tts voice.

But it's not like they said in their publicity "open it and you're ready to go"

thx, i tried that today, i dont know why you cant cleared susan's voice directly from HOME... think about all those 65+ year old lady that will received it for christmas hoping that their unit will tell them which street to turn and i will have to tell them that they need to go delete a files from the registry of their device

as you said, its kind of false advertising

where do you find Juliette and Bernard on Home ? I can't even find them.
Would buying a SD Card help me with the space problem ?

Well they sorta did.. you know... It's ready to go right out of the box? It's in their flash ads and stuff.

Hi DCourteau

Which files do you delete to clear out Susan's voice? I would like to install Simon but of course do not have the memory space available and there is no option to delete Susan. (So far my only disappointment with TomTom One XL)

I was also in the situation of needing a French computer voice. I called tech support and was steered in the wrong direction to add computer voices. In Tomtom Home, there is, in the first sreen, a box to add maps, voices etc. Once selected, you are met with a first screen where one option is to add voices and is NOT the one to select since the voices there are not what you are looking for. You need to get to the second screen using the arrow shown at the end of this screen. On this second screen, one will find "computer voices" that will be listed alphabetically in order of languages.

On the XL-S, with American Susan already installed, you need to make room to install any other voice. I had the whole LoquendoTTS folder deleted (backup before deleting anything) and the French computer voice of Juliette was installed along with the French needed files.

Tomtom should have put 2GB of internal memory on the XL-S to put both French and English computer voices but would have cost a bit more.
