TomTom Model(s)

All specs on the XL335S say it only has USA and Canada maps. It even says so on the box.

However, I finally got a chance to play with a demo at Costco. It has App 8.411, and map USA_Canada_Mexico_P ???. I browsed the map and it has tons of roads in Mexico.

So I then thought "Maybe they put a 340 up for demo by accident?" So I waited a minute, and the demo screens came on and the device clearly called itself a 335S. And Costco only carries the 335S, no other Tomtom, so they couldn't have swapped demos by accident...

So unless what's in the boxes is different from the demo, Tomtom appears to have renamed the 340s into a 335s just for Costco. There's absolutely no difference I can discern from the two models.

Has anyone bought one and can you confirm the included map?

If it really is USA/Can/Mex, the 335S is an awesome deal. It's currently on sale for $99 at Costco.

Hard to Beat for $99

Just bought two to replace our aging Go910s.

As shipped

App 8.414 (1239/090707) OS: 320300
GPS v1.20
Boot 5.5131
Map: 'USA_Canada_and_Mexico_P' v835.2419

Serial starts with "RU" so a "XL IQ Routes Edition / 340 2GB" by TomTom serial numbers.

I won't say that it has good coverage of Mexico, but there are definitely roads there.

How recent is the v840? Are updates expected anytime soon? (Should I wait on my 30-day map update guarantee?)

It took my 910 .ov2 files with no apparent problems. I just started "playing" with it this morning.

Some things I miss from the GO910 that IO may not have found yet
  • Show current road name (at bottom)
  • Show next-turn road name (at bottom)
  • Compass set to point to destination (in male-mode with North at top)

The audio quality is pretty harsh (cheap speaker?), but for $99 with the essential TTS street names, hard to beat.

Are we saying that the xl335s has maps of mexico pre loaded even though its advertised as not having the mexico maps on the box? and how much memory does the xl335s have in comparison to the xl340s? are they the same 2GB?

My XL335S only came with US and Canada as advertised (no mexico) Hummmmmm..........
Bought online at Target for 93.00

What map (full name and version number) is on your 335S?

Perhaps the Target build and the Costco build are different.

I bought one at Wal-mart Canada today for $99. It comes with "North_America_P 835.2499". There is no road information for Mexico (not that it matters to me).

The XL335S comes with 2GB and TT Home calls it "TomTom XL•S IQ Routes Edition", both of which are identical to the XL340S.

Other than the map, the only difference that I've noticed so far is that the quick menu has fewer options (excludes safety cams and fuel prices). The main menu still shows Tomtom Services, including the safety cams and fuels prices (not that they worked on the XL340S anyway).

North America makes more sense. Matches what we'd expect to see on that device.

So it looks like a batch of 340's got shipped to some Costcos (like mine) with incorrect additions of Mexico maps.

But the proper map should be North America

Thanks,
