Why is TomTom so desperate for me to update/upgrade

TomTom Model(s)
GO6200
I'm getting practically drowned by emails from TomTom begging me to update my device and upgrade my device. The amount they are offering as a discount on a new device has been going up from 10 to currently 35%.

I have no intention of buying a new TomTom because the new ones are no better than my current one and, frankly, I'm not a happy customer.

My question is why are TomTom so desperate? I feel like this isn't just a sales initiative or friendly advice. My assumption is that they want us to buy a different device off our own back to save themselves the indignity of dealing with angry customers when they cut off the 'lifetime' services they paid for (again).

I'm not going to do any updates until I know what I will lose in the process. How do I find out?

Unless I'm mistaken, there was never any intention of deleting updates for life.
You can unsubscribe from your account to stop receiving emails from TomTom.

They have withdrawn lifetime services before because it happened to me and several thousand others. Some people had the services they paid for removed only 6 months after buying a new device. They were investigated for a breach of consumer protection law because of that. I'm sure they can and will do it again.

If a GPS device is entitled to a lifetime update and it disappears, you must contact Tomtom support to have your rights reinstated.

Do you use the custom POI feature on your 6200?

Unless I’m mistaken, moderators on here don’t work for TomTom so couldn’t possibly know that?
How are you able to make such a statement?

Why? Because TomTom has always maintained that lifetime updates will always be honored.
Unless TomTom goes bankrupt.

@benwatkins, I think it's just money greed trying to sell you a new device.

I've had TomTom products since 2003 (TomTom on a Compaq PDA). I've stuck with TomTom because I've found the routing and later Traffic to be generally better than the competion, but staying with TomTom has been a compromise.

Over the years, many things have been removed, including a custom speech file so that places were correctly pronounced and the very useful custom POIs, which were not only shown on the screens (map and navigation) but also had proximity alerts with custom sounds.

Yet unnecessary things were added. Why do we need 3D buildings that just bloat up the size of the map, are not exact, and don't cover the whole of the country?

In many ways, the ultimate TomTom was the 2009 TomTom GO 950. Since then, the TomTom products have declined in functionality.

Well that’s not true. TomTom have previously breached consumer protection on Unfair Trading Regulations and also the Consumer Rights Act.

They seem to insist on a different interpretation of “lifetime updates”. All devices sold with “lifetime updates” were purchased because of the lifetime update offer. It’s a marketing ploy, and now they claim…

>“Lifetime means the useful life of the device, i.e. the period of time TomTom supports your device with updates, services, content or accessories. A device will have reached the end of its life when none of these are available anymore”<

In 2013, internal memory was limited to 2 GB, or even 4 GB.
I'd be curious to know which GPS models benefit from lifetime updates.

Yawn!

All 3 of mine do. It’s not a “benefit” because we paid extra £s for lifetime updates at the point of purchase.

So, for these three models, do you still have lifetime updates?
I don't see what the problem is?

At the moment I do, but updates get trickier and trickier to install, it’s as if TomTom want the device to die. Every update brings new issues..

The problem here is you! Fan boy.

First you’re insisting my Trucker 6000 isn’t a Trucker 6000 because they don’t have lifetime updates, insinuating that’s why my speed cam update won’t install. When proved wrong you can’t even bring yourself to apologise.

Now you insist “there was never any intention of deleting updates for life”. when quite obviously there is. You state it like it’s a fact and aren’t even aware of how TomTom have been treating their customers, either that or you plainly have more contempt for TomTom customers than they do!

I also showed you that the Trucker 6000 doesn't offer lifetime speed camera updates (see photos).

Have you ever thought that TomTom could have offered a deal on the Trucker with lifetime speed camera updates?

It's your GPS that will try to survive before the lifetime map updates.

All models with lifetime updates were also sold without lifetime updates at a lower price 🙄
No you explicitly stated I either don’t have lifetime updates or I don’t have a Trucker 6000!

“Have you ever thought that TomTom could have offered a deal on the Trucker with lifetime speed camera updates?”
That’s what you should’ve been thinking, I already knew they do because I bought one, and explained to you many times over mine had lifetime updates, you insisted it didn’t!
…..and still you can’t admit fault or apologise!

My devices have an easy life, always stored fully charged and only occasional use, fan boy
