Why did Tom tom take me away off the beaten track??

My TomTom iphone Go Navigation (3.9.9) // ios edtion- with latest updates etc.. took me way off the way home .
Instead of the quickest way home ( 39 min.) it kept telling me to go 4 KM north to another route which was slower speed limt more stop lights etc and the time to go home was also approx 39 min or so..
I have after 20 years never seen this before .. Tomtom always takes the quickest shortest way home during rush hour..
