hi to all
im new to the forum and have a few questions .if anyone can help that would be great.
so I used to own a tomtom rider version 1 and swapped it for a garmin zumo 660 to use on my motorbike.now I want to swap back to tomtom but which devise do I choose.
i would like to use it both on my motorbike and in a motorhome and...
1,be able plan my trips on my computer (probably using tyre)then put them on the device.
2,be able to record the route I've travelled to view on computer
3,connect to a Bluetooth headset
I have been looking at rider v5 or 1005 camper and caravan,i like the extra caravan/motorhome features.
but could I load into the rider some of the motorhome features used on the 1005, poi's width /length preferences.
or do i use the 1005 in a case on the bike.
any help would be appreciated.
thanks dave f

Wow -- tough question. The Rider is really purpose built for working in the weather on your bike, but doesn't have the 'camper' map and restriction features that you'll get on a camper model (http://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/products/customised-navigation/camper-caravan-navigation/). You really are looking for two separate units. I've never liked the idea of putting one of the non-weatherproof devices into a case.

The map for the Rider won't have the necessary map data or firmware to use the Camper features, and you can't move maps between units in any case. The Camper maps have a fair bit of additional information embedded to make it all work.

Either one will be a significant compromise in one way or another. Afraid in your shoes, I'd be looking at two units.

hi canderson
thanks for your help. I suppose your right I was just trying to avoid buying two expensive units when each will see only a small amount of use.one last question does the 1005 camper caravan allow route planning using tyre.as i cant see the point in buying a sat nav that will not let me plan my own routes.
thanks dave f

The Rider series continues to allow for itinerary planning of the sort you will recall (building one or more *.itn files), but none of these newer models with 4 digits allows for that kind of planning. To get around that, we recommend that people build a custom POI file instead, using numeric characters at the beginning of each waypoint entry to keep them in sequence (e.g., 01_DownTheRoad, 02_SomewhereFurther). The device won't account for each as 'visited' when you arrive, but you can keep dialing each one up in sequence as you go just as you would any other POI.

As the others have said, I think you're caught between two spcific requirements...

It seems you really need:
1. Bluetooth to headset
2. Itinerary planning

and the camper features would be useful...

So my gut feeling is that the Rider would still be the best bet, if you are opting for one unit.

That's especially true if you feel you could get by with just adding POIs for height/width restrictions etc. to the unit, but remembering that no TomTom is capable of "avoid a particular POI type" for normal POIs when it works out a route, just warning you about them as you approach.

thanks for the replies guys
andy p I think you are right the rider seems more suitable for my needs.i'm not too bothered about width and height restrictions but mainly the camp site and aires in Europe poi's .I suppose I could find these somewhere on the net and load them into the rider and i'd be sorted.looks like the best way to go.
thanks again. dave f

Try PocketGPSWorld.com for free POI sets in the UK and Europe. I know they have the Camping and Caravan Club sets and I think they have Aires too.

You do need to be registered as a user on the PGPSW site and currently logged in, but it's all free and above board (the forum is similar to this one).

EDIT:- I've just had a look, and the THREE Camping+Caravan Club site lists are under the "Associations" heading, and "campsites" is under "Accomodation", but I can't see Aires on a quick glance. You can also get them from http://www.airetoday.co.uk/satnav.html).

I don't know what is available in the way of Camp Site POI files for Europe but I know that they exist for North America in a form that would be easy to load on a TT Rider. I assume that the same would be true for Europe, as things like this seem to be fairly universal on both sides of the pond.
