bearing in mind that TT won't fix out of warranty units (at least in the US) what sort of place do I look for to get mine fixed? The only links to a dedicated GPS fixer I've seen are to a store in New York. Anyone had any experience taking their TTs to a TV repair shop for instance? Or any other recommendations?

Check out craigslist for a cheap replacement. The 930 often goes for $150-$200. Earlier ONE models go for $50-$75. I doubt you'll find any repairs for less than that.

I don't blame Tomtom for not offering US repair. US electronics repair in general runs around $100/hr. It's just not worth it based on used Tomtom prices.
