Whats the deal?

My TomTom One 3rd Edition tried to direct me down a road that doesnt exist. Its just grass in the real world.

So, I made a map correction stating that the road doesnt exist and TomTom put a red line through it which is fine. I uploaded the change to the mapshare community aswell.

My gripe is...Even tho I told my device that the street doesnt exist, it STILL tries to send me down that non-existent road.

Whats the deal with that? Am I doing something wrong?

I haven't done that made that type of correction yet, but for your own purposes you can simply block both directions of travel on the road using Map Share. This should effectively route you around the road.

Ok

Thats strange, blocking both directions on a street that doesnt exist is supposed to work better than just tellin your tomtom that a street isnt even there?
Ill give it a shot.

Only certain types of Map Share changes take effect immediately on your own maps. Blocking a direction of travel is one one change that takes effect immediately. Other types of changes are for reporting only, and don't take effect on your own map until they are distributed to everyone via Map Share.

:S

The blocking of the street worked, thanks.

I cant even believe that this street is on my map, v715.xxxx. Ive lived in Ottawa, Canada for 29 years and there has NEVER been a street there.

Why TomTom thinks there is, is just ridiculous. Older Garmin maps show the proper street. Makes me wonder why I went with TomTom over Garmin in the first place :(

Don't judge a book by its covers and don't judge a gps by the inclusion or exclusion of 1 street. I GUARANTEE you there are locations where TomTom maps are more up to date than Garmin or other brands.

At least you can report the situation to TomTom or teleatlas.com and hope a future map will reflect better accuracy.

I still think Garmin has a much better routing engine. It always out performs TomTom when it comes to finding a destination, faster, safer and with better acuracy and time.

....now we got it right !!!

With some minor exceptions I think that TomTom's pre-IQ Routes routing was on par with Garmin in my area. Now with IQ Routes I think TomTom is actually better.

I have always thought that Garmin's "guidance" - the instructions/maneuvers they identify as necessary for keeping you on the planned route - is horrendous. Too many unnecessary "keep left" and "keep right" instructions, and not enough "turn here" and "turn there" instructions. I would constantly have to check the on-screen map display to make sure there weren't any unidentified turns coming up - defeating the purpose of having audible instructions.

On the other hand, TomTom does a much better job in this regard. Even if I thought the routes were sub-par, I would take the combination of sub-par routing and excellent guidance over a good route and poor guidance any day.

As always though, performance can vary geographically, and my experience and preferences may not be the same as yours.
