Whats new in 8.01?

Just synced up my 720 and the 8.01 firmware came down. Any idea what is new in this version.

Only things I've noticed is a slightly different interface in the voice recognition screen and new options in the map correction menu.

I notice the icons seem to be a little smoother. Slightly different phone icon. There is also the option now for "Show lane changes" but it says my maps are not compatible. I wonder if it is just the new maps that will allow that option.

Replacement of the functional compass in N7 with a smaller version that always points North in N8. Black & White poi icons replaced the colour ones.

Mapshare improvements...Can mark speeds on roads, no left/right turn

My favorite is you don't have to hold the 'on' button down so long to start it. I think most of the updates in it are to support IQ routing which will be in the next version of maps.

Updates don't come down automatically just because you connect to tomtom! You have manually get them don't you?

Newr ones do when you have TomTom Home check for updates - it will offer them to you. However, besides doing a complete backup first, also hahe Home copy your current application back to computer. than, if you have trouble with the backup, you can have Home remove it and then reload only the old application back to your unit.

If you end up with a new application that gives you trouble and you have not saved old ones through home, than you may have to do a manual reload of an older version.

I have "check for Tomtom updates" checked and still don't see the 8.0 update. 7.481 is all that is available.

It seems to me I read in another post that you need to do it in steps. first download 7.481 and then it will offer you the 8.010 I believe.

Doesn't work for me either. On my PC it downloaded 7.481. After another reset it will not offer any newer versions for download. On my Mac it doesnt even try to download any firmware. Updater is JUNK ! All I get is map corrections.

Just figured out my problem. I had to update the software on both the Internal Flash and the SD card on which I have additional maps. Upon updating both to 7.481 I was able to update to 8.01. They really do make it difficult.

YA. So far it's not offering me anything for version 8 firmware and I can't figure out why.

EDIT: I had to remove the SD card and then all of my custom POIs (for space reasons). Looks like it is updating now.

When I downloaded the Western_and_Central_Europe map to the SD card of my 930, only that map (Folder) and a Folder called "maps" containing a 3KB file called "Western_and_Central_Europe.tlv" went on it.

I cannot believe that extension stands for TruLaser .
Anybody knows what it means at TomTom?
