What is 'Set Marker Position'

This is a new GPS for me and I do not see in any of the documentation where it describes 'Markers'. You get there by hitting the + button while broswing the map. What do they mark or how are they different than favorites? Most importantly, how do you get rid of one after you have set it? I tried it out to see what it does and now it's there forever!
