wow 99 views and only 1 reply?????
DHN's suggestion (re the TomTom page) is the best there is. I'm curious, though. When you say your TomTom isn't "detected" -- do you mean that when you plug it into the USB cable, the TomTom does not ASK whether you want to connect to the computer, or do you mean that you reply "Yes" to that question, and the computer never notes the presence of the unit? Do you have speakers on your computer, and do you hear anything when connecting (ding ding)?

Well easy like this. when i plug the lighter adapter the green light turns on but i have to leave the plug half way in only (if i plug the cable all the way in it doesnt make contact in the port. (i can charge the gps at least) when i used the docking station nothing happens: no green light no do you want to connec to pc. Ill going to check when i get home to see if i can verify that is my laptop the one screwing up this thing.

Certainly sounds as if the port on the unit is wonky. Perhaps you need to call Support (866-486-6866) for a repair under warranty.

No green light means there is no power (or the led is dead, slim chance though)
+ could be your usb port is bad or dead.
+ could be your docking (and its usb cable) is bad.

Try on other usb ports.

Secondly, did you turn on your unit after plugging it into the dock?

Also, try using a standard usb cable instead of the dock. If you can get the standard cable to work like the car charger works, by putting the plug in partially, then I would agree that it sounds like the port on your 920 is damaged.

well for replying your posts, i turned in the unit before plugging and after plugged so it could be the laptop or not.

Depending on the Laptop or the Laptop settings ,the USB port(s) may not be powered.I can only assume its designed this way to avoid power drain to the Battery of the Laptop.Desktop PCs aren't immune to non-powered USB ports either.

There should be NO laptops (or any other USB host device) being made that cannot be set up to supply as much as 500mA from a USB port. If they can't, they would not be permitted to even use the USB logo due to non-compliance with the standard. The power drain is a potential fact of life if you claim to be a USB host device.

Not sure what USB 1.0
A unit load is defined as 100mA in USB 2.0, and was raised to 150mA in USB 3.0. A maximum of 5 unit loads can be drawn from a port in USB 2.0, and was raised to 6 in USB 3.0. There are two types of devices: low-power and high-power. Low-power devices draw at most 1 unit load, with minimum operating voltage of 4.4V in USB 2.0, and 4V in USB 3.0. High-power devices draw the maximum number of unit loads supported by the standard. All devices default as low-power but the device's software may request high-power as long as the power is available on the providing bus.

Here is the WINDOWS Setting under XP

There may also be a BIOS setting .

We seem to be agreeing here. Pre USB 3.0, 5 unit loads x 100mA = 500mA. It gets "better" for 3.0. A host with no host power = no USB logo. As I recall, misuse of the logo gets you a trademark suit.
