TomTom Model(s)
XL-S
I bought a TomTom VIA 1505 yesterday to replace my SICK XL-S. I have replaced the battery twice in the old XL-S, but now it won't connect to HOME. It has become useless.

I do want to save a few of the voices I have downloaded into it over the past two years. I believe each voice has contains three different files.

Is it possible to pull these voices (files) from the old XL-S and move them into my new unit?

Thanks....

How's this for an answer ............... 'maybe'?

In theory, if you connect your unit to the computer, the MyTomTom desktop icon (you need MyTomTom at tomtom.com/getstarted NOT Home 2 with your Via) should show an additional menu item 'Add Community content' and when you click on that, one option is Voices.

At which point you can browse to the folder where your various voice files are stored on your computer, select them for loading on the unit.

That's the theory........... In reality, you may not be 100% successful.

You cannot copy computer voices if your older model had them.

That brings in an additional factor. Purchased maps, like maps, are supposed to be locked to the device first installed upon.

If you bought them for the express purpose of using them on the new unit, well, I don't think that functionality is there for North American models yet.

The voices were puchased over a year ago for my XL-S.

It has now taken a crap. Will not connect to TomTom Home, is not recognized in my computer. It's third battery has gone dead.

Just trying to move what I bought to my new unit.

Do you still have the voices on your PC?
They will either be in one of your backups (you made backups didn't you?), or in the original folder they were downloaded to (usually C:\Documents and Settings\Andy\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Downloads\complete\voice)

If so, have you tried dhn's suggestion from post #2?

What happens when you try?

It should work for "community" voices, but I suspect that purchased ones will (as dhn says) be locked to the original unit (like maps you don't buy the voice itself, just a licence to use it on one particular machine).

If you find you cannot get them to work, it's always worth ringing TomTom and pleading your case, saying the original device died almost straight after you bought the voices.

It gets even worse. My old desktop also crapped out. Got a laptop, not able to save any of the data from desktop.

I think I will just forget about it.

Toss the inoperaboe XL-S, and if I feel the need for another voice, just pay for it.
