voice calling

Go essential - try to make a call I say " activate my phone and the satnav responds and a pop up shows a microphone and a contacts book and a text saying " speak after the tone" but there is no tone and it does not respond to anything I say, I have to do everything manually after that. What am I doing wrong? Please help
