On the Tom Tom, I press the very lower right hand side of the unit. It indicates that I have version 8.30. What is this telling me? (ie: map or software version) and is this the latest version?

That's the firmware version installed on your unit.

Now, press on the version number and the next screen shows you the map version (and build) installed.

Yep, f/w 8.3 is the latest.

Your map is over a year old. The newest maps have more roads, poi's, etc.

Also........with your map, try to select a street that 'belongs' to Toronto (since amalgamation was 10 years ago!) and it won't find it if the street originally was in one of the boroughs, like North York, Scarborough, etc.

With the current map, set the city as 'Toronto' and the street will be found.

With version 8 maps, you get IQ routing but, for Canada, no Advanced Lane guidance .

Having said all of that, I also had the 7.10 map installed until a couple of months ago and managed pretty well.

One of the big features added with the 8 series of firmware is the IQ Routes feature and the Advanced Lane Guidance(ALG) feature.

IQ Routes in the original implementation takes the average speed of the road into account, not just the official speed limits. This would be based only on the day of the week(weekday/weekend), but did not take the time of day into account. The 8.3 firmware with 8.15 maps together change this to consider the time of day as well, so things like the time of day(rush hour and general day driving will be slower than driving at 2am) are taken into account.

In a way, the change from 8.10 to 8.15 may not provide a better map, but I am almost tempted to pay to upgrade to 8.15 just for that improved IQ Route version(notice I say almost). I hope that the normal January sale will be the same 40 percent off as last year.
