A friend of mine has bought a VA 280.

I have an XL and can see the folders in Windows Explorer. This allows me to drop the OV2 files I use for geocaching.

When my friend connects via Windows Explorer he cant see any of the folders.

Is this normal ior is there a setting he needs to change?

My apologies for the lack of detail but he has only explained this to me over the phone and I haven't had the chance to look at it yet.

Cheers

Glenn

You use TomTom Home or your PC's native file system tool to move *.ov2 files around.

The newer units don't allow access to the file system. Your friend needs to be using MyTomTom (https://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/mytomtom/getstarted/) instead of Home. After getting this loaded, in the lower right corner of his screen (in the systray) he'll then find the MyTomTom icon. If he selects "Add community content", that will take him to a device page that allows him to send the *.ov2 and associated *.bmp files to his Via 280 (what we call a Via 135 here in the U.S.).

I like to divide them all up into individual types, so feel free to steal my icons, attached. I have more, if you'd like them (found, found archived, owned, etc.)

As you might note in my signature, I have (among others) a Via 135 here (your 820) and it's part of the regular caching gear - though the 1535 Live takes 'front seat', so to speak.

Here's a few more icons:

Thanx to Canderson for your help here. Plus I have also joined the forums thanks to you and Team Waldron.

Every thing is working well now - bar one thing. So another question if I can. In the VA280, >settings>safety settings>"Warn when driving faster than allowed speed" -
I have checked this an expected an alert (I set Inform7) - I expect a ping if I go over the speed limit. I have yet to hear an alert when (assume I went over speed)...is there anything else I should turn on to get this safety warning, Note I have not checked "warn when driving faster that a set speed" - as this seems to be a manual way of alerting you. I want alerts when over the POSTED limit.

thanks

If you have downloaded any updates to your GPS, the alert for over-speed has probably been reset to "Silence". A lot of people have complained about that hidden consequence of getting an update, but TomTom was still doing it the last time I looked.

BTW, I have my GPS to alert when exceeding the speed limit but do not use the option to "warn when driving faster than a set speed". My GPS warns as intended when exceeding the speed limit, so it clearly does not require the use of the "set speed" option.

With best wishes,
- Tom -

Thanks for the heads up et. I must say I had not updated the unit out of the box and the warning was on inform7. Maybe the default map did not include speed limits. Ive now updated to the latest map (map update since I registered). I'll test in the next few days with the latest map and let this forum know.

cheers and clear skies - Astro,

Not sure who will see this one. The VA280 - in settings>safetysettings>warn when driving faster than allowed... this is CHECKED

however, I don't get an alert (yep, set alert 7) when driving over speed. Do I have to subscribe to something. Or is there something else I have to turn on???

This is obviously an important reason for having the TomTom. A little disappointed at the moment. Everything else on the unit is sweet and does what I want it to do.

thanks forum readers for any help. It seems so basic but am I missing something??

:):)

QUICK MENU-

is there a way to get more options for the Quick Menu on the Va280. I'd love it to be able to go to a WPT file "quickly" rather than go through Navigate to>POI>POI near you>.... then your WPT group.

It would be nice for the quick menu to let you choose the WPT category up front. Is this possible? The "Make your own menu" only has limited choices.

thanks from TeamAstro.

You mean a VIA 280?

It will only alert you to being over speed if the road-speed data is embedded in the map for your area. I've no idea how complete they are in the Australia maps.

Do you have a Settings menu for "Status bar settings" on your Easymenu device?
If so, when you have "Maximum speed" ticked, then you should get both your current speed and the speed limit showing on the status bar and theat part of the bar should turn red if you go over the limit.
If you don't get those, then nothing you set up for an audible warning will work either.

I posted this one a while ago as you can see. Still after anyone who can offer a suggestion of getting to a POI category quickly - perhaps through the shortcut arrow on the main screen. This allows quick access to say Favourites, but I can't see a way to link it to a POI category, eg Hotels.... or my own POI. Is there. And yes, it's a Via280....

Still holding my breath

thanks.

Wish I could. At least the most recently used POI categories (built-in or custom) are the ones that appear in the first 6 icons, so it's better than always having to search.

Sure, the icon for my POI is right there but going thru Navigate to>POI>POI near you>.... then your WPT is a bit of a pain when you do it many times a day. The shortcut macro is already there so adding a custom POI to this (indeed any item in the TomTom) you think would be a great idea. Looks like as a moderator you may have a way of suggesting this to TomTom some how. II'm sure they get a lot of suggestions.

thanks again
John

This is a private peer-to-peer forum without any direct connection to the company TomTom.

II'm sure they get a lot of suggestions.
Yes, I agree, but candersons's suggestions will weigh as heavy as yours or mine.

Yours perhaps more. I think I'm "mud" there these days after some of the things I've been saying about more recent models. Makes the Via280 look like perfection in a box.

...I'm pretty sure if the TomTom guys were smart, they be listeneing to someone like you who plays a lot with the things....

cheers :)

I very much doubt there will be any further effort made to change/improve the software any of the older models now, other than "maintenance" releases.

For better or worse, they are 100% behind the Android-based NAV4 software now.
