Using TomTom without a map on vacation

I live in Europe and I'm going on vacation to Australia and New Zealand. I was wondering if there is any point in trying to use my TomTom (One) as a 'mapless' GPS, by programming destinations by their Lat-Long and simply having it tell me how far away the point is and what bearing, rather than trying to find driving directions.

At first sight, it doesn't seem to want to play ball, when I try to insert a 'favourite' which is outside the boundaries of the current (Europe) map. Am I wasting my time?

if u do happen to save favorites of places out side the map, it will not work trying to navigate to it. TomTom can not navigate to a point off the map unless you u use offroadnavigator. However, I dont think it will work, but who knows.

I don't think it can be done - but if it is possible I'd like to know how. I have a 920T and have been using it with home made Google Earth photo maps (see: https://www.tomtomforums.com/showthread.php?t=4890&page=2)

I thought maybe I could select one of the other pre-installed maps on the 920 to avoid issues with road-snap, etc. but it doesn't work. For example, if I go to the Map Preferences and select the Guam maps it defaults to a screen somewhere in Guam. Then I go to Browse Map and hit the button at the top right of the screen which should show the "you are here" red dot. But instead it just gives an error message "No usable locations near GPS position".

Then I tried to make a route to an airport in Guam and I got the same error message. It does seem capable of saving my current location as a waypoint however, so I guess you could create favorites for later use with a foriegn map. But aside from that, I don't think the GPS has much value if you don't have maps for the country you're in.

The free program Offroad Navigator will allow you to do what you want.

It has some problems with v7 firmware, but there is a fix if you carefully read the start of the above page. (The problem is the screen is garbaged and unreadable.) If you need help with this, send me a PM.

The easiest solution is to revert to v6 firmware, if you still have it. If not, you can find older firmware for the One here:

With v6 firmware, Offroad works perfectly.
