Using One XLS on Mac

I have just bought a One XLS unit and it is waiting in the States for me to pick up for an up coming driving holiday. (I live in Australia)
My "lame" question is: I am using a Macbook. Should I connect my Tomtom to the Mac as soon as I open it or just start it up and go, I want to back everything up for safety, but am afraid I might screw up and ruin my vacation.
Does the XLS work straight out the box? If so am I right in assuming I could enjoy the holiday and then play around on the Mac at a later stage.
As I am driving between main cities, I don't think I will need an updated map.
Any advice will be welcomed.
By rge way, when I get the unit back to Australia am I right to assume I just purchase the Australian maps and install on an SD card?

Welcome to TTF.

The unit will work out of the box, yes, but we always strongly suggest a user backup his/her unit's contents first thing. In your case, that would be using Finder, not Home, for the backup.

Yep, when it comes time to switch maps, copy one map folder to the computer and replace with the map folder of the other country.
