Can someone tell me how to maximize the use of a SD card? Is there a reference I can read to learn more about using my SD card? I have a 630 and installed a 8 gig card, just happened to have one.

Many thanks

A lot of us have found that for various reasons, the best configuration for us is to keep the map folder(s) out on the SD card and the balance of the TT's stuff in internal memory. FWIW, 8GB is going to be a bit of overkill, even if you have more than one map loaded. I can get North America and Western Europe all on a 4GB card with a little room to spare.

The newest (around for a time) application of 8.351 allows for even a 32-gig sdhc card, which is REALLY overkill! :D

I installed an eight gig card into my 730. I then transfered the map folder to the card. I used the extra space on the internal memory for voices and MP3 music. I used the remaining space on the SD card for poi's and MP3 files. I attached a cable from the audio out jack on the gps to aux in jack of my car stereo. Now I get my music the way I want and also get the navigation instructions played over my car stereo. Works like a charm.

If memory serves, the 630 doesn't include the MP3 player, so unless the OP goes to 3rd party software from Mobilnova or similar, there's not a lot of ways to fill an 8GB card.

Identify maps folder

Want to be sure I am moving all needed files of "map" to SD card - or does the unit view both cards for info required? What files do I move Unit is a 720

Thanks

Move the specific map folder (not the one called 'map') to the sdhc card using Explorer and your unit will recognize the existence of the map on the card just fine.

As described, works super and in preparation for extended business trips to Eur have also purchased a 2GB Eur map that is also installed on the SD card, easy switch from one to the other.

After a techi at TTCS said 16GB or larger might slow down my 740 a bit, I stole an unused no-name 8GB class 6 MicroSD card from my wife's camera case (found out her camera slowed markedly with greater that 4GB card) and all works swimmingly.

After install, TTHome downloads for gas prices, map share, map update, etc., all recognize the card exists and downloads are moved to card or internal memory, as needed, without fault, each and every update. Right now I have (per TT Home) 1681.6 gb free internally and 3828.2 gb free on the SD card.

Chuck:)

Haven't tried mp3 yet.

GO 720 and 8 GB SDHC???

Hi,

Ive been looking around different forums to get an understanding if SDHC cards are supported by TOMTOM GO 720. And if cards with 8GB capacity or greater are supported.

Do anyone of you know?

Do I need to do anything with the brand new memory card before inserting it into the GPS?

Furthermore, is it possible to keep the internal memory as it is with all the maps and the applications, OS etc. and to only have mp3 on the SDHC?

Do I get the question to boot either from the internal - or SDHC-memory every time i boot the GO 720?

I know I should copy the mp3 folder from internal memory to the SDHC to ensure GO 720 can identify the folder. But is there anything else I need to do?

Ever so thankful!

Best regards,
Peter

A 720 with the latest app (8.351) can handle a sdhc card of up to 32 gigs (though that is overkill)

I run my 720 with everything on internal but the map folder is on my 4 gig card. Works fine.

You can also have a mp3 folder (lower case) on the card AND another mp3 folder on internal with files in both and the application will see all the mp3 files........

You can put the application on the card and the way the 720 works is, if it detects the app on the card, it boots from the card.

No real reason to have everything on both internal and the card.

There are some who have everything on the card, NOTHING on internal, and the unit works fine.

Most just put maps on the card, mp3 files as well and everything else on internal.

Ok thanks for the info. What is disturbing is that I called TOMTOM support a minute after posting the message here and they said only SD of a maximum 4GB was supported. Seems like they do not want to take responsability for SDHC and cards with capacity greater than 4GB.

One more thing, do I need to format the SDHC card before using it? If so:

- Can I have the card in the GPS and locate and then format it using MAC app? I do not have a SDHC card reader in the computer.
-Anyone know who to format a SD card on a MAC?

Thanks in advance!

Peter

It used to be that way.....max of 4 gigs.............OVER A YEAR AGO!!

In Windows, the cards normally come formatted for fat32 out of the package.

I understand that in a Mac, you simply have the choice of Dos Format. You do not want NTFS (not that you will likely see that option). TomToms only know from fat32.
